

Herbert was born on April 29, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to Fritz & Frita (Lichtblau) Hekter, they preceded him in death.
On September 27, 1957, in La Porte, he married Betty J. (Bush), she survives.
Herbert is a retired district manager for General Telephone Company, retiring in 1993.
He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1955, served in the United States Navy, aboard the USS F.D. Roosevelt, prior to working for General Telephone Company. He previously lived in La Porte, Hobart, Valparaiso, Ft. Wayne, Angola, and Fremont, Indiana, and lived in Vail, Arizona, and Venice, Florida. His hobbies included, camping, fishing, and following baseball, and was a Chicago Cubs fan.
Herbert is survived by his wife: Betty Hekter, Fremont, Indiana; two daughters, Tammy & Don Sickels, Fremont, Cheryl Lilly, St. Louis, Missouri; two sons, Herb & Jodi Hekter, Jr., Vail, Arizona, Jeff & Lisa Hekter, Venice, Florida; six grandchildren: Melissa Squire, Aimee Jones, Don Sickels, Jr., Daniel Sickels, Blake Hekter, Allison Hekter; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Eleanor Kruger, La Porte, Doris Bailey, La Porte; two brothers: Walter Hekter, Valparaiso, Indiana, Gerhard Hekter, Michigan City, Indiana.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Hekter; sister, Hildegard Bradfield and a brother, Fritz Hekter.
There will be no visitation.
Graveside Committal Services to be conducted by Veterans Service Color Guard at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida at 11 A.M., April 3, 2013.
Burial will take place in Florida National Veterans Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
Memorials are requested in memory of Mr. Hekter to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.
