

She was born March 14, 1922, in Auburn, Indiana. Her parents were Joe and Ethel (Nichols) Martin. She attended elementary school in Auburn, Indiana, and high school in St. Joe, Indiana, where she was a varsity cheerleader.
Her parents moved to Chicago in 1937 where many members of the Martin family lived. In 1940, she married Max L. Mitchell of Fremont, Indiana. During their married life they lived in Fremont.
Thelma was school secretary for several years and was elected town treasurer during her career. She worked as a salesperson for several years. She was active in several organizations: The Town and Country Club, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Women’s Society of Christian Service and was active in the Fremont United Methodist Church of which she was a member.
Thelma enjoyed reading, knitting, golfing, swimming and dancing. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing and attended many dances during their lifetime. She enjoyed sports, especially baseball and basketball.
Surviving are two daughters, Patty and Jerry Champion of Coldwater Lake, Coldwater, Mich., and Kathy Lantz and Jerry (Deceased husband) of Fremont, Ind.; one Son: Martin and Shirlee Mitchell of Coldwater Lake, Coldwater, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, William Martin of Florida; and one sister-in-law, Rosemary and Roger Burlingame of Fremont, Ind.
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Laverne Mitchell; her parents; a son-in-law: Jerry Lantz; and three brothers, Al Martin, Robert Martin and Joey Martin
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Fremont United Methodist Church, Fremont, Ind. With Chaplain Ken Ponds officiating.
Burial will be in Ray–Covenanter Cemetery at Fremont, Ind.
Memorials are to the Fremont United Methodist Church, Fremont, Ind., or Starr Commonwealth For Children.
