

Bernard “Barney” Eugene Schneider, 91, of Fremont, OH passed away on January 7th at 8:24pm surrounded by his family. He was born September 25th 1924 North of Fremont on county road 89, the son of Edward and Caroline (Swint) Schneider.
February 27th, 1945 he was drafted to the United States Navy, serving until July 21st, 1946. He was inducted into the Seabees construction unit, CBMU539. He still kept in touch with the Seabees. In addition, he was featured several times in the newsletter “The Woid CBMU 539”. After his time in the military, Bernard used the GI bill to go back to school for agriculture. On April 13th, 2011 after waiting on the list for two years he proudly went to Washington D.C. on the Honor Flight to visit the WWII memorial. In September of that year the Schneider family hosted the last Seabees reunion in Fremont, Ohio.
On September 14th, 1946 he married his love Elizabeth “Betty” Dalton of Vickery, whom he met at the Sandusky County Fair. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clyde. Betty and Barney celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary September 17th, 2011 at Chateau Tebeau Winery. Betty preceded him in death on October 31, 2012.
After the military he worked as a full time farmer, as well as full time at Great Western Sugar, and had many other jobs depending on the season, he retired in 1989. After retirement, he and Betty enjoyed their winters in Frost Proof, Florida for 15 years. They loved to travel and visited Hawaii with the farm group, Alaska, all 50 states, Europe, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and enjoyed numerous fishing trips to Canada.
Barney received his diploma on May 26th, 2002 from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, at the same time as five of his grandchildren. He volunteered his service to Sandusky Township Fire Department from 1968 to 2000, Golden Threads, Creek Bend Farms in Lindsey, and North Coast Vets. He was also a part of many Veterans Day parades in his Jeep.
Surviving are his children: James (Jean) Schneider , Kathy(Jim) Pfefferle, Leonard (Radelle Karg ) Schneider, Bonnie(Michael) Kuzma, Tina (Elvis Jones) Latvis, Patrick(Judith) Schneider, Timothy(Vicky Elliott) Schneider, Robert(Lynn) Schneider; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; brother Herbert Schneider of Findlay, sister in laws Beverley Dalton, Evelyn Dalton both of Vickery, Rose Dalton of New York. He was preceded in death by; his wife Betty, grandson Nathaniel Schneider in 1997, his parents and siblings Marcella Reinbolt, Norman, Raymond, and Cletus.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8P.M. at Keller-Koch-Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, OH where Vigil Services will begin at 7:30P.M. A Mass of Resurrection will begin at 10:30A.M on Monday, January 11, 2016 from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Zacharias officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with Military Graveside Rights performed by the V.F.W. and American Legion. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contributions to St. Joseph’s Church or Promedica Hospice.
