

Marie Catherine (Wammes) Wagner, 83, of Fremont, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Memorial Hospital. She was born January 1, 1929 in Fremont on the Wammes homestead, the daughter of Carl S. and Florence (Klein) Wammes. She was baptized at St. Joseph Church and attended the grade and high schools at St. Joseph. Marie was married to Gilbert A. Wagner, Sr. by Monsignor James Arnoldi on April 24, 1948 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. For over 60 years, Marie and Gilbert prayed the daily rosary together as a family. Upon Gilbert’s retirement in 1972, he joined her in attending daily Masses. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008. Marie began serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Mass in 1972 and became the Sacristan at Church in 1990. She served one term on Parish Council. Marie took Holy Communion to residents of: Elmwood, Parkview, Parkside, Memorial Hospital, and to the homebound. She was a Founding and Charter Member of Heartbeat of Fremont, commissioned a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, Leader of the Rosary Society, and also gave of her time with the Bereavement Committee. She was a devoted member of the Blessed Sacrament Confraternity, Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer Group, Curciollo, Charismatic Prayer Group, Padro Pio Prayer Group, Divine Mercy Sunday and Novena, Marian Society, and Daughters of Isabella. She was a member of the first choir at St. Joseph Church. Marie was greatly honored to be selected as the recipient of the SJCC 2008 Heritage Award for outstanding dedication to St. Joseph Parish. She was also active with Mobile Meals (15 years), 4H Adviser (15 years), Cub Scout Leader (3 years), Charter Member of Plant & Bloom Garden Club, and Homemakers Club. Many people will remember Marie from volunteering in the medical records department at Fremont Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. Marie loved walking at the YMCA and on the family homestead on Christy Road. She loved feeding the birds, was an excellent seamstress, and a creative cake decorator. She loved attending family gatherings and watching the family play sports. But most of all, she loved God, Faith, Family & Friends and serving others.
She is survived by her “Gifts from God,” children, Theresa Rauch of Massanutten, VA; Jeanne (Tim) Haubert of Burgoon; Margaret (Dale) Garrison of Copley, OH; Gilbert (Amy) Wagner, Jr., Diane (Jeff) Covert, and Marsha Wagner, all of Fremont. 13 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Gearheart and Ruth Hill; brother, Earl Wammes. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Edith Overmeyer; brothers, Bernard, Merle, Carl, Jr, and Paul Wammes; son-in-law Jim Rauch; step-mother Irene Wammes; step-sister Claudine Booker.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8PM with prayer services beginning at 7:30PM at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont. A Mass of Resurrection will take place on Friday, December 14 at 10:30AM at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Michael Zacharias officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
