Bob was born in Fremont, Ohio on June 7, 1930 to Mary Sullivan Heid and Carl Francis Heid. He graduated from Fremont Ross High School in June 1948 where he played football and basketball for Fremont. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
Bob attended The Ohio State University and played football for legendary coaches Wes Fesler and Woody Hayes. Bob was the Captain of Hayes’ first team in 1951. Bob also played in the infamous Snow Bowl of 1950. While the football game did not turn out favorably for the Buckeyes, the aftermath was quite fortuitous for Bob as he reunited with his childhood classmate Sally Ann Reardon of Fremont for their first date. Sally had eyes for Bob all through high school, but he remained firmly focused on sports and academics until that fateful evening walk on a cold, snowy night in Columbus.
Bob graduated from OSU with a degree in petroleum engineering. After college, he served in the Air Force and played football at the Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Bob always said the generals were every bit as serious about their teams as college coaches. Bob and Sally married Labor Day September 6, 1954. They lived in Columbus, while Bob worked for Columbia Gas and attended Franklin Institute of Law School (n.k.a. Capitol University) at night. Bob, Sally, and their 4 children moved back to Fremont where Bob and Sally practiced law together for over 40 years. Bob and Sally were both very proud of being sworn in by The Supreme Court of the United States.
Bob was very proud of his hometown and was thrilled to return to Fremont to work and raise his children. Bob was always laughing as he recounted his childhood adventures in “The Valley” and running wild along Minnow Creek. Other than having to “walk uphill in both directions” to school, we are fairly confident most of the tales were true. Bob loved every moment of his legal practice and only retired when health made it a necessity. He took down his shingle at the age of 79 with no regrets, a host of wonderful memories, and a closetful of colorful neckties. His family is eternally grateful for the kindness extended by his many friends which allowed him to enjoy life in his own home until the very end. Every “Hello Bob”, in the last few years was a precious gift to him. On June 21, 2017 Bob went to sleep for one last time, no doubt dreaming in Scarlet and Gray, and passed peacefully in his own bed at home. Everyone who knew Bob will have no doubt that he will be cheering on his beloved Buckeyes from heaven. When Ohio State plays The Team Up North this year, make yourself a Manhattan and raise a toast to Bob who no doubt has already teamed up with Woody and all his former teammates, for surely there would be no heaven without Buckeye football.
Bob was predeceased by his parents Carl and Mary, his brothers Phillip and James and his sisters Mary Alice and Florence, and his son-in-law Bruce Tobin. Bob is survived by Sally Heid his wife of 63 years, his children: Jennifer Tobin, Charles (Laurie) Heid, Emily (Jere Kolstad) Heid, and Brigid (Kurt Swartzlander) Heid, and his grandchildren: Nathan and Alex Heid, and Max Tobin.
