Arthur J. Dick, a retired Agrium agricultural employee, passed away on July 20, 2013 after a long illness. Arthur J. Dick was born May 13, 1930 to Abraham Dick and Katherine Dick in Windom Minnesota. He was the eldest of three boys. As a young boy and growing up on a farm in Minnesota, he assisted his father in the daily chores of living on a ranch. At the age of 18, Art moved to California from Minnesota with his parents and two brothers, Harold and Ray Dick. Art’s family settled in Orland, California. Art often stated, “He never missed the cold winters of Minnesota and the snow.” But, Art had a secret from the cold Minnesota weather. He was an avid skier, which surprisingly came out on a trip to Sierra Summit one winter. After years of not skiing, he put on his skis and went on a quick run; and soon he was skiing briskly down the mountain to everyone’s amazement.
Art came to Fresno to attend Fresno Pacific College in 1952. During this time he also worked at Rodman’s Chevrolet in downtown Fresno. Art meet his sweetheart and best friend, Betty L. Hedman, at Fresno Pacific College.
He enlisted into the United States Army in the early 1950’s. His favorite job in the army was driving the captain around in a jeep. Art was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, and later moved to Fort Polk, Louisiana. While in the army, he married Betty in Bakersfield, California in 1954. They were married for 54 years.
Upon discharge from the army, Art and Betty decided to make their home in Fresno. His position with Western Farm Service, (currently Agrium), took him all over the Central Valley working with various farmers. Art loved the California weather and living in the food basket of the world. Art did not really want to retire, and he was employed in the agricultural business for 35 years.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Arthur is survived by his daughter, Rhonda and future son-in-law, Wayne; and his brother Harold Dick of Salinas, and Ray Dick of Oakland. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty.
Jesus stated: “I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” John 11:20-25
A Graveside Service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 1:00 pm.
