Our beautiful and cherished mother and grandmother, Dorothy Ann Makley, passed away on December 30, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was born in Newark, NJ, on December 19, 1924, to Edward and Rosemary O'Keeffe. Dorothy was the second of seven children. She grew up in a family that was strong in their faith and in which there was much love and laughter.
At age 20, Dorothy drove from Michigan to California with a friend to experience travel and adventure. It was in Hollywood, CA, that she met the love of her life, Louis "Lou" Makley. Dorothy returned to Michigan for several years and she and Lou kept in touch. Dorothy returned to California and was reunited with Lou. They were married on August 8, 1950, after which they moved to Fresno where they raised their family.
One of Dorothy's greatest pleasures in life was spending time with her family. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member at Fort Washington Golf & Country Club for many years. She also enjoyed playing bridge and continued to do so until a couple of months before her death.
Dorothy was a woman of strong faith. She attended Mass every Sunday of her life until she was physically incapable of doing so. When she was no longer able to attend Mass, her granddaughter, Mary Kate, brought her communion at home. Dorothy loved to laugh and most pictures of her reflect that. She was a classy dresser who never wore a pair of jeans in her life. We will miss her beautiful smile and her steady and loving presence in our lives. She has been an amazing example of how to love and live life to the fullest.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at St. Agnes Hospice; particularly to Carolyn and Heather, for the wonderful care they gave.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lou; her parents, Edward and Rosemary O'Keeffe; her sister, Rosemary Wood; and her brothers, Edward O'Keeffe and Harry O'Keeffe.
Dorothy is survived by her five loving daughters, Rosemary McGuire and her husband Russ Conrad, Marlene Frye and her husband Dennis, Eileen Makley, Kathleen Lucas and her husband George, and Mary Wigh; her grandchildren, Katie Falk and her husband Chris, Michael McGuire and his wife Stacy, Christine Conrad, Brittany Kunz and her husband Marty, Tyson Frye, Matt Lucas and his wife Trisha, Clinton Lucas and his wife Kristin, Mary Kate Lucas, Emily Lucas, Alexis Wigh and Austin Wigh; and her great-grandchildren, Sydney, Josh, Siena, Justin, Taylor, Katelyn, Jack, Regan and Jonah.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Wednesday January 6, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m.
