Eber Stackpole, age 85, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 11, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born on January 10, 1928, in upstate New York to Eber and Blanche Stackpole. Upon grad- uating high school, Eber trained as a United States Navy pilot during World War II and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his military service, he flew transport planes carrying military supplies and transporting wounded soldiers from Tokyo to Honolulu and on to Travis Air Force base. It was in Honolulu where he found his wife, Joan, who was working as a nurse. Within six months of their first date, they were married in Vancouver, Canada and moved to California. They ran a motel for a few years in Oroville before relocating to Dinuba where they owned and managed a variety store. In 1964, the family settled in Fresno, where Eber began his career working for the California Employment Development Depart- ment. He retired in 1988, after serving the state for 26 years.
He has been blessed with six children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He has served as a prominent member of Saint Paul Newman Center since 1970. Eber and Joan spent much of their retirement traveling throughout the world. Together they traveled throughout the United States, northern Europe, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Egypt and Africa. Eber has been a loving caretaker to Joan after she experienced a debilitating stroke in 2002. Their 60 year marriage has truly demonstrated a powerful example of enduring love and loyalty.
He is greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
Eber is survived by his wife Joan; and his children, Paul Stackpole and his wife Dolores, Don Stackpole and his wife Brenda, Kathy Floyd and her husband Keith, Lynn Bremer and her husband Tim, David Stackpole and his wife Myra, and Pat Stackpole and her wife Dawn.
