Our Dad was called home on November 13, 2019, with his family by his side. He was born to Candelario and Concepcion Bernal on September 16, 1938 in Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico and was one of ten children. As a child, he learned the value of hard work and made it a point to instill that work ethic onto his sons. He worked almost his entire life in the Ag Industry, and enjoyed being out in the farm making sure the crops are growing, getting watered and getting harvested. He did not possess a lot of formal education, but he was very smart and intuitive and knew how to make things work. On December 31, 1962, the querubín (cherub) married his angel on earth, Socorro Monreal; and with her created their family. They lived most of their lives in the farmlands surrounding the Fresno area, where they raised their boys.
We have many memories of our Dad while growing up; but one of his greatest joys was being the “Grill Master” for all of our family gatherings. He loved handing out “samples” and made sure everyone was well fed. He never let anyone leave our house hungry, nor empty handed. He was also a jokester and loved making people laugh with his one-liners and various zingers. His sense of humor was always with him, no matter what health challenges he was facing. He never let his health get in the way of making people smile.
Later in his life, his grandchildren were what brought him the most joy. He loved watching them grow, play sports and become individuals. He was never one to shy away from letting them know how much he loved them.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents, many of his siblings; his son, Alfredo Bernal; granddaughter, Celeste Victoria Bernal; and grandson, Noel Michael Bernal.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Socorro; three sisters: Myrna (Ignacio) Bernal, Maria Moreno and Olivia (Joel) Cortez; his sons: Jesse (Nora) Bernal, Noel Bernal, and Eric (Douglas Cozzitorto) Bernal; granddaughters: Jessica Bernal, Audrey (Matt) Bernal, Nicolette (Chad) Lujan, and Amber (Chase) Walker; grandsons: Alex Bernal, Alfredo Bernal Jr., RJ Bernal, Max Bernal, and Phillip Castro; 8 great-grandchildren; plus many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends who helped enrich his life.
We would like to thank Pastor Mario and Emma (Dad’s niece) Plascencia for their continued spiritual guidance and support. They have always been there for Dad and us; offering prayers and love.
Services are planned for Monday, November 25, 2019 at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel, 202 North Teilman Avenue, Fresno, CA. Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am; and the Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am at the Chapel. Interment will follow at Belmont Memorial Park (across from the Funeral home).
