

Elsie Maxine Atencio passed away at home, peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, October 8, 2016. Elsie was born to Frank and Eva Romero on February 12, 1933, in Del Norte, CO. Elsie was preceded in death by Richard, her dedicated husband of 61 years and brother Eloy and sisters Ernestine, Eleanor and Virginia. She is survived by her children Doris Gonzales, David Atencio, Douglas Atencio, Moses Atencio, Teresa Atencio, Annette Shiflet and Gina Mendez. Her brothers, Joe Romero & Johnny Romero. Sisters Mary Rivera, Emma Vigil, Mercy Stickler and Barbra Archuleta, along with numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her children, and by all who knew and loved her.
Elsie was fulfilled by her many years of volunteer work with various Catholic Charities and organizations and was especially proud of her involvement with the Crusillo movement. She was a skilled and avid quilter and took great joy in making her beautiful quilts for her family and friends. Elsie cherished her family and regularly bragged about her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments, no matter how great or small.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home (1525 E. Saginaw, Fresno, CA.) on Wednesday October 19, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary starting at 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary Queen of Apostles Catholic Church (4636 W. Dakota, Fresno), on October 20th at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
