Jack Ping Woo was born in Canton, China in 1911. He immigrated to the US in 1927 and settled in Savannah, GA where he worked in a grocery store, saved up his money and eventually purchased his own grocery store, which he operated with his wife, Anne. They worked long days, 7 days a week. In 1957, they sold their store and home and moved out to Fresno, California where they were coaxed into a "retirement business" named the Chinese Bazaar in downtown Fresno. It was previously owned and operated by Anne's sister and brother-in-law, Steven and Sarah Wong. They ran the Chinese Bazaar, a dry goods store where they sold costume jewelry and oriental artifacts, until 1967 when they decided to finally retire.
Jack loved to fish, especially for rainbow trout at Lost Lake in Fresno. Not only did he eat what he caught, but he shared much of his bounty with friends. He also had a great passion for growing award winning camellias. He and Anne had a yard full of hundreds of varieties of camellias, which they would display at camellia competitions throughout California.
Family was very important to Jack, and while he worked hard and saved for what would become a lengthy retirement for him and Anne, he always made it a priority to send money back home to China where his mother and siblings were. He would eventually encourage his little brother and his family, his mother, and his sister and her family to move to the US, where they were able to thrive and have a successful business and career.
The family would like to thank Jack's caregivers, Wanda Jeung, Gary Edwards and Joanne Howlett, for their compassion and sensitivity to his needs. They would also like to thank Dr. Ravi Rao and Hinds Hospice for their care and treatment.
Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anne Lee Woo, to whom he was married for 66 years.
He is survived by his son, Conway K. W. Woo, DDS, and his wife, Carol G. Woo; grandson, Darren C. Woo, and his wife, Trudy Woo; granddaughter, Doreen Woo-Davis, and her husband, Todd Davis, and their children Chloe and Colton; his daughter, Jeannine Wang, and her husband, Hugh Wang, MD; grandson, Weylan Wang, and his wife, Heather Wang, and their son, Kai; granddaughter, Meilin Duncan, and her husband, Scott Duncan, and their children, Tiana, Kiri, and Brett.
