Mr. James Herzog

James Herzog passed away on December 27, 2013. James was born in Corning Iowa on January

20 1924 to Elizabeth and Lawrence Herzog. He grew up on a farm alongside his five brothers

and three sisters. In the 1940's James moved out West to California and landed a job as a

taxicab driver in San Francisco. He alwavs talked about how exciting it was to drive all the

sailors that were on leave through hilly streets of Frisco. James eventually wound up in

Southern California where he found his niche in the earth moving construction business. He

purchased and operated his own heavy equipment building his very first business into a thriving

success. In the early 1960'5 James moved his family to Fresno and was employed by the City of

Fresno as a street construction inspector for several years. During this time James also started a

parking lot sweeper business and soon had several of Fresno's largest shopping centers as

clients. With his three oldest children grown and on their own in the mid 1970's James sought

out new challenges in Pagosa Springs Colorado. He moved there bought a 17 acre ranch and

several businesses. He owned and operated a grocery store, full service restaurant, ski rental

business, and the famous Pagosa Saloon. In the early 1980's James moved back to Fresno and

continued his entrepreneurial endeavors by purchasing and running a restaurant and later

opening a vitamin store.

James will always be remembered for his adventurous ways and enthusiastic approach to life.

He was always at the ready to help family and friends thru difficult emotional or financial times.

James was preceded in death by his parents and seven of his brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his brother, Russ; his children, Tim, Kim, Chris, and Liz; seven grandchildren and five

great-grandchildren.

Visitation iwll be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from

4:00 to 7:00 p.m. follwed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

Interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
