Jo Ann Byrd

30 septembre 1937 – 7 novembre 2025
Avis de décès de Jo Ann Byrd
AUX SOINS DE

Lisle Funeral Home

Jo Ann Byrd, 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went to be with her Lord on November 7, 2025, in Fresno, CA, after a head injury and a short stay in the hospital. She died peacefully at Hinds Hospice surrounded by many who loved her.

Jo Ann was born on September 30, 1937, in Butler, PA, to Campbell and Anna Mae Wilson. She graduated from Shenango High School in Newcastle, PA in 1955, and then moved with her family to California. Jo Ann graduated from Fresno City College in 1957 and Fresno State College (now California State University, Fresno) with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1959. She taught third grade in the Bay Area and in Fresno at Baird Elementary School before her children were born. Jo Ann returned to teaching years later at Fresno Christian Schools where she taught sixth grade for one year and third grade for 20 years. She was a beloved teacher and colleague. Jo Ann married Monte Douglas Byrd in 1956. They were married for 55 years until his death. They had two daughters, Lori Kay (married to Ken Demeter in 1988) and Julie Rae (married to Mark Morgenstern in 1989). Jo Ann and Monte were the proud Grammy and Poppie to 6 grandsons, Aaron Demeter (married to Tamara in 2023), Caleb Demeter (married to Liz in 2023), Daniel Morgenstern (married to Kristen in 2023), Andrew Morgenstern (married to Sarah in 2023), Timothy Morgenstern, and Samuel Morgenstern (married to Hadlee in 2025). Most recently in 2025, Jo Ann joyfully welcomed her first great-grandson, Rowan Morgenstern (son of Andrew and Sarah). Jo Ann lived a very full and active life until her final days. She lovingly served her husband and family with joy and devotion. She ministered at her church as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director, Bible study leader, and Women’s Missionary Society leader. She also served her community in many capacities, especially as a volunteer for 13 years at Hinds Hospice. Jo Ann was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time with friends socializing or playing word games, and loved to cook and bake. A devoted grandmother, she often traveled to Arizona and Minnesota to spend time with her children and grandchildren there. She never turned down an offer of a game or a puzzle with her loved ones. She was a lifelong learner and kept up a working level of skill with her computer, phone, and other technology she engaged with daily.

Jo Ann is survived by her brother, George Wilson, her sister, Kay Abelman Richey, and was preceded in death by her brother Michael Wilson. Jo Ann is lovingly remembered by all who knew her for her hospitality, her kind spirit, her servant’s heart, and her faith in God. Jo Ann was a long-time member of The Bridge Church (formerly the Evangelical Free Church) in Fresno, CA, where she joyfully served and was loved by many. Her faith in Jesus Christ was the central and empowering facet of her life.

Memorial Service will be held at The Bridge Church, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in Jo Ann's name to Hinds Hospice in Fresno, CA.
