Joy Anderson Smith is now gone, but the wonderful memories of her life are ours to keep. Joy was an active, talented woman with her own charming way of doing things. A kind-hearted, caring person, Joy was always generous to share her knowledge and skills with others. Much of Joy's character was formed through the loving influence of her parents Clark and Angela Anderson. The other primary loving influence came from her husband, Gayland Smith, whom she met in second grade. Their relationship truly flourished their second year of college at California State University, Fresno, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Joy graduated from Fresno State in 1964 with a degree in Home Economics. Joy and Gayland were married in 1965 and were blessed not long afterward with two sons, Geoffrey Clark and James Arthur.
After an internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, she earned the designation of Registered Dietitian. Later she added Certified Diabetic Educator to her degrees. Joy's professional career included positions at Valley Children's Hospital, San Joaquin Hospital, and also as a private consulting dietitian. Her civic interests included active involvement in the Fresno Junior League, the Bakersfield Junior League, and the Diabetic Educators group. She was also a member of Stockdale Cou- ntry Club.
Among Joy's many talents was sewing. She belonged to several sewing and quilting groups. She was a master seamstress, even designing and sewing her own wedding dress. She made many clothes for her sons and for her grandchildren.
Joy and Gayland loved to travel. They roamed the globe, always finding interesting places and meeting new people. Joy loved sharing activities and spending time with her family and grandchildren at the family retreat at Rock Haven, Shaver Lake. It was there at her beloved Shaver Lake house that she had a stroke, surviving long enough for family to assemble and bid her farewell at the hospital.
Joy was loved and appreciated by many people. She leaves many lifelong friends in Fresno and Bakersfield.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clark Anderson; and her sister, Angela Joan Anderson.
Joy is survived by her mother, Angela Anderson; her husband; Gayland, her sons, James Smith, and Geoffrey Clark Smith and his wife Jessica; her grandchildren, Clancy, Caden, Siena, and Kalista; her nephews, Chris Billick and his wife, Marina, Stephen Smith and his wife, Teresa, and Robert Smith; and her niece, Erika Billick.
