Marcus was born June 11, 1923 in Memphis, TN. He was the only child of Marcus Isaac Vaughn and Gladys "Springer" Vaughn. He was raised during the depression era and was able to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles during his youth and throughout his life. At the age of eight years old, his father tragically died in a trucking accident. His mother worked 60 hours per week in a shoe polish factory, to support the family. As a youth growing up in Southside Memphis, he learned about life and survival pretty much on his own. Though he was not a major 'problem-child', he was certainly mischievous and had an abundance of misgivings.
At 18 years old, he was drafted into the Army during WWII. He was a member of the 752nd Engineers. His outfit landed on Omaha Beach June 1944 during the European theater. Though he lost many friends to enemy fire, he also forged lifelong relationships with many others from his outfit. He cherished these friendships until the day he passed.
After returning home from WWII, he met and fell in love with the young lady who became his bride of 65 years, 17-year-old Angelina Nodini. Marcus was still a rambunctious young man early in their relationship. But Angelina's steadfast Christian faith and perseverance tamed his excited spirit. She was the constant in his life and ultimately his purpose for living on this earth as long as he did.
Marcus and Angelina were blessed with four children, Marcia, Giselle, Marcus Jr. and David. He loved and adored his family. Over the years, they were blessed with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Marcus was an entrepreneur and took many opportunities to relocate and improve his family's livelihood during his life. He always wanted more for his family than he had growing up. Most recently he retired from real estate after 35 years as a broker.
In the past 13 years, he devoted his life to being the sole-caregiver for his invalid bride, Angelina, who required 24-hour care. This was done in their Fresno home. He often said, "As long as I have breath in my body, I'll take care of her, because she would do the same for me." He also said frequently, "I consider it an honor and a privilege to take care of my Baby." True to his word, he was caring for his 'Baby' when he breathed his last.
The greatest joy that we as family and friends know and appreciate about him is that during his latter years, he truly and sincerely grew closer to God. He set an example for all who knew him by his commitment to caring for his 'Baby', Angelina, and for his love and generosity to all. He is a fine example of a godly man, a loving husband, father, grandparent and true friend.
Marcus is preceded in his passing by numerous family and friends, most recently the passing of his son-in-law, James L. Griffin. Jim was not only his CPA but, friend, confidant, mentor and true & faithful husband of daughter Giselle. He considered Jim as a son. Jim's passing significantly affected Marcus.
Left behind, and waiting to see him again someday, are Marcus' wife, Angelina; his four children and their spouses; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends, as well as many fond memories of his life.
