Maxine was born on April 3, 1927, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. She was the middle child of Rollin and Della Goodbar’s five children. The family moved to Fresno for better job opportunities where she graduated with honors from Fresno Technical High School.
She went to work at J. C. Penny’s as a sales person but worked her way to eventually being the manager’s secretary.
Maxine met her future husband a the local roller rink and married, Ace Bates, on January 29, 1946. She followed him to North Carolina where they lived a short time until Ace was shipped overseas during World War II. She then returned to Fresno to work at J. C. Penney’s until Ace returned from the war. Then they moved to Pierce, Florida where they had their only child, Lynn (Bates) Hazelton. They moved to Fresno, California where she lived until her passing.
Maxine is survived by her daughter, Lynn Hazelton, her two grandsons- Ryan Hazelton and Troy Hazelton and his wife, Deanna Hazelton and two great grand daughters, Madilyn and Sydney Hazelton. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Ace Bates, and her brother, Ralph Goodbar, and her sister, Mary McKensie.
