

Upon graduating from Edison High School, he joined the US Navy in 1943 and served on USS Shamrock Bay aircraft carrier as a medic during World War II. This ship was assigned to the fleet for the invasion of the Philippines Islands, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
Phil worked as an X-ray technician assisting Fresno doctors for 41 years.
He was an active member of the Edison Social Club, served as its President and held several other leadership positions in the Club.
He co-founded the Palm Shields Little League and the Babe Ruth Baseball League which still exist today. Phil also served as a Cub Scout Master.
He is survived by his son Marty Bitter and wife Gale, as well as three grandchildren (Jenny Bitter, Jason Friedrichs and wife Kristy, Lisa Abramson and husband David); 7 great grandchildren (Madeline Liske, Sienna Liske, Colton Liske, Benjamin Friedrichs, Maya Friedrichs, Lucy Abramson and Vivian Abramson) and is pre-deceased by his loving wife Shirley, his six brothers (John V. Bitter, Conrad Bitter, Reuben Bitter, Harold Bitter, Robert Bitter and Norman Bitter) and his sister Alvina Winder.
Graveside services will be held at Belmont Memorial Park, 201 N. Teilman Avenue, Fresno on Wednesday, February 2 at 10:00 am.
