

Fresno. Ray was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather and
friend. He enjoyed fishing in the mountains, golfing, traveling, and watching his grandkids’
sporting events. Ray graduated from Kerman High School and Fresno State College. While at
Fresno State he met the love of his life, Shirley Budde and they married in 1953. Ray was a
teacher, counselor, and principal at Washington Union High School between the years of
1956-1986. He coached football, basketball, track and tennis - at times he even drove the
school bus to these events. Ray never met a stranger and was quick to smile and start up a
conversation about anything and everything.
Ray was very involved in the Fresno and surrounding communities. He volunteered his time
coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He and his wife were also part of the Fresno
State Baseball Bulldog Club as well as active members of Peoples Church. Ray also enjoyed
substitute teaching and attending his SIRs (Sons in Retirement) luncheons /golf outings in his
later years.
Ray was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Holland and his parents James and Mildred
Springer. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Springer of over 66 years. Son, Jeff and his
wife Lori of Redmond, OR, son John and his wife Lisa of Clovis, and son Dennis and his wife
Andi of Hanford. His grandchildren and great grandchildren include: Curt Benson (wife Sherry),
Brett Springer (wife Melissa & daughter Violet), Mark Springer (fiance Kaycee Kraft), Shanna
Springer-Shaw (husband Robert, children Savannah & Parker), Shaylene Springer (daughter
Rowan), Sammy Springer and Will Springer.
A special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living and St. Agnes Hospice for the loving
care they provided over the last few years. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Peoples
