In loving memory, we share the passing of Ronica Sarkisian Carlisle. Ronica was born to Raffi and Carla Sarkisian in Selma, California. She majored in economics at UC Santa Cruz and worked in New York City and San Francisco before settling in Sacramento. There, she lovingly raised her two children, Justus and Califia Carlisle, and taught for 30 years at River City High School. A lifelong learner, she earned a master’s degree in American history from Sacramento State and subsequently lectured for several years at American River College.
As a devout Christian, she was a highly active member of the St. James Armenian Apostolic Church in Sacramento. She often worked two to three jobs to send her children to Christian schools. In her later years, she attended St. Gregory in Fowler whenever her health permitted.
In all seasons of her life, from her childhood to college, and into her career and retirement, she made enduring friendships. She loved to talk with her friends and regularly sent them newspaper clippings, books, and handmade cards.
She was forever sharp, witty, and full of advice. She loved cats, coffee, and newspapers. She was one of the most passionate, authentic, and resilient individuals we have ever known.
Ronica reconnected with her Armenian roots and became closer to her mother and extended family when she retired to Fresno. She was preceded in death by her father, Raffi Sarkisian, and her uncle, Dale Sorensen. She is survived and beloved by her mother, Carla Sarkisian, her son, Justus Carlisle, her daughter, Califia Carlisle, her sister, Julie La Blanc, her nephew, Jensen La Blanc, her niece, Camille La Blanc, her aunt, Janice Sorensen, and many cousins. Lastly, she recently became the very proud grandmother of Laura Carlisle.
