Mrs. Sonia L. Maslowski

Sonia was born in Sacramento, California on September 6, 1923 to parents Bert and Louise Muyzer. Sonia's father was born in Rotterdam, Holland and her mother was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Sonia was very proud of her heritage and delighted in several trips to Czechoslovakia and Holland to visit relatives and enjoy sight-seeing.

Sonia and her parents moved to Fresno in 1926. Sonia attended Fresno High School and graduated in 1941. She briefly attended Fresno State College. She met Joe Maslowski through their mutual Czech background and involvement with SOKOL Fresno, and they were married on September 6, 1942. They had seven children - 4 girls and 3 boys - who were the pride and joy of both Sonia and Joe. They were married 62 years at the time of Joe's death in March, 2005.

In February 1968, Sonia went to work doing secretarial work for Valley Nitrogen Producers. When the company moved out of Fresno in 1983, Sonia went to work at San Joaquin Memorial until 1986.

Sonia loved getting together regularly with her friends to play cards and faithfully started her day solving the Jumble puzzle. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed needlework and sewing.

Sonia was preceded in death by her husband Joe; parents Bert and Louise Muyzer; infant daughter Joan Marie; sister Tina and nephew Gary.

Sonia is survived by three sons, Rod and his wife Georgia, and Steve and his wife Geri, and Bert; three daughters, Tina Najarian, Kristi Reeves and her husband Billy, and Julie Garfoot and her husband Tod; seven beloved grand-children, Kasha Maslowski, William Reeves and his wife September, Sarah Franks and her husband Derek, Ally Reeves and her fiancée Matt Defendis, Cori Laemmel and her husband Tyson, Casey Wilson and Trevor Garfoot; and one beloved great-grandchild, Cambria Rose Reeves.

Survivors also include brother-in-law Tony and his wife June, Sonia's lifelong friend and sister-in-law, Mary Murphy and many loved nieces and nephews.

A special thanks is expressed to Dr. Karen Hansen-Smith for her thoughtful and tender care for Sonia over the past year.

Sonia will be missed by all and especially by her doggies, Jackie and Teddy.

Recitation of the Rosary will be held at the Stephens and Bean Chapel, on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 7 PM.

A Graveside Service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 11 AM.
