Susan Shayne McKeon, age 57, of Clovis, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 25, 2017, after a four-month long valiant fight against a brain tumor. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was comfortable and pain-free as heaven’s angels gathered to take her home.
Susan was born on July 23, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Wesley-Passavant School of Nursing in 1981, starting a lifetime calling to care for the sick and dying. She was a beloved hospice nurse for many years in Sacramento and Fresno, helping hundreds of families as loved ones transitioned from this world to the next. Most recently, she was the nurse navigator at the St. Agnes Breast Center, where she helped women who were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Susan married the love of her life, Mark, on December 18, 1984. Together they travelled the world, living in 8 cities, 2 states, and 4 countries over the course of their 34-year marriage. In each place she lived, Susan always listened for God’s call, and then said “Here I Am, Lord.” She has left behind a network of friends around the world who have been surrounding her with love and prayers through the course of her short illness.
Susan is survived by her husband, Mark Joseph McKeon; daughter, Katherine Georgiana McKeon; son, Mark Gregory McKeon (Colton Murphy); son, Nicholas David McKeon; daughter, Megan Inese McKeon; sisters Janice Rosen (Allen) and Jacqueline Carey (Robert); her many cousins, nieces and nephews; and her countless friends.
The family wishes to thank Hinds Hospice, and in particular nurse Nancy Gardner, for their loving care over the last weeks. In addition, the family wishes to thank Kidisty Hagdu, who works as a home health aide but is actually an angel in human form, and Wendy Talesfore, who showed us the true meaning of how to be a good neighbor.
If you would like to make a donation in Susan’s name, you are invited to donate to the veteran’s house project at the Heart of the Horse Therapy Ranch, 14335 Academy Oaks Ln., Clovis, CA 93619, a project that was close to her heart.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A Vigil Prayer Service where guests will be invited to share brief remembrances of Susan will follow at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
