Friend at University.  Always a lovely lady.

Susan was my friend, my cheerleader, and my champion. She iIS one of the main reasons there have been 22 moms who’ve said yes to life this year to date. Without her I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing , the way that I’m doing it. She was an angel even in life . Her love and laughter and stern desire to do right will live on in my heart on good days and bad days . May she have eternal peace . May all of her family and friends take comfort in having had the opportunity to share her life.

Dear Susan,
I hope you are listening as I write this.  You do not know me.  We built a cabin on Kupreanof Island out of our skiff and have owned the property for 20 years.  We have boated up and down the Wrangell Narrows many times and never stop worrying about lodge guests who are given the keys to boats with relatively minimal instruction.   Little emphasis is on the importance of life vests given how few guests wear them.  On June 5th, we were in our cabin, near navigational aid 17 just south of you.  We listened to all the voices on channel 16 unveiling disturbing details of this horrible day.  Many people and the Coast Guard searched for you and everyone listening was standing by ready to assist.  The Wrangell Narrows was shut down to all boat traffic.  I only have 2000 words on this platform so please know that there were many non-lodge Alaskans worrying for you that day.  Nothing was your fault.  Nothing was your husband’s fault.  The number one rule in the Narrows is that large vessels always have the right away because they cannot get out of the way in time.  It wasn’t the Captain of the Vis’s fault.  He will be saddened by this for the rest of his life.  The Alaskan environment can be unforgiving. 
Not long after your accident, a seasoned boatman sank his skiff while pulling up a crab pot in Duncan Canal.   He was not trapped under it so they were able to swim to shore.  If the so-called unsinkable Hewes had not sunk, it is very likely the outcome would have not resulted in the tragedy.  We burned candles for you and I was the voice of a stranger talking to you and trying to comfort you.  I did not know who you were and only just recently met you through your obituary.  I wonder if you heard me?  Alaskan tears of sorrow were shed for you and your husband that day.  Our prayers go out to your beloved family left to navigate their lives forward without you.  I hope they can take comfort in knowing that you will always be watching over them.

I hadn’t known Susan very long, but her sweet spirit truly touched me in a way I will always hold onto.

Everyone at Fig Garden Rotary is heartbroken by the sudden loss of Susan Paul.  Gordon and his entire family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Susan was a ray of sunshine for so many. She was an inspiration in sharing her Catholic faith.  She was an example of standing up for the defenseless especially the unborn children. She was joyful and fun to be around. I will miss her terribly. My deepest condolences to her family.

Susan Paul was a gift to so many, not the least to us at Right to Life of Central California. Susan contributed so much of her time, energy, effort, and love to the cause of life. Susan was a volunteer and board member with our organization for many years, and made significant contributions to our organization's growth and mission. She was a constant, kindly presence praying outside of Planned Parenthood for the women, couples, and babies inside, and supporting our Outreach ministry to provide those in need with alternatives to abortion. Her death is such a loss to our community. On behalf of the entire staff, board, volunteers, and community of supporters at Right to Life, I extend my prayers and deepest condolences to her husband Gordon and the entire family. You all remain in our prayers and in our hearts.
