Vicente Chavez Sanchez, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age 86 of Fresno, California, on September 28, 2023. Vicente was a devoted father, husband, grand-father and great grand-father, and is survived by his wife of 59 years Maria E. Sanchez, his loving daughters Lourdes Sanchez, Laura Zepeda and her husband Antonio Zepeda, and Lupe Sanchez, his grandchildren: Amanda Hilliard and her husband Benny Hilliard IV, Cynthia Jacobo and her husband Derek Jacobo, Mark Munoz, Vincent Munoz, Anthony Renteria, Julio Cesar Garcia, and his great grandchildren: Andrew Munoz, Derek H. Jacobo, Tristan Hilliard, Xavier Munoz, and Sally Jacobo. He is also survived by his brothers Rodolfo Sanchez and wife Irma Sanchez and Mario Sanchez and wife Margarita, and brother-in-law Jesus Carreon, sister-in-law Carmen Montoya and sister-in-law, Carmela Hernandez, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family, throughout Mexico and the United States. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Concepcion Chavez Sanchez, and his sisters Maria, Ignacia, Lidia, and Natalia, and his brothers, Fernando, and Domingo. We take comfort in knowing he has returned to his heavenly, loving family.
Vicente was born in Camargo, Chihuahua on April 5th, 1937. He was the 6th of 9 children born to Jesus and Concepcion Chavez Sanchez. Vicente was restless in school, and before finishing elementary school, opted to leave school and start working in what would end up being his passion, auto mechanics and automobiles. From an early age, he worked at several gas stations and hardware stores; washing, polishing and sorting in the automotive industry.
Vicente met Maria E. Silva in the early 1960s, a beautiful young telephone operator also from Camargo, and after dating a couple of years, they married on December 29th, 1963. In October 1964, they welcomed their first daughter Lourdes, followed by Laura in July 1966, and Lupe in October 1970.
While starting a family, the couple also started a small grocery store in Camargo. Vicente being the ever so perfectionist, grew this small grocery store into a thriving business. This business allowed them to take several vacation and trips, including Veracruz and Mexico City in 1970. In 1972, they vacationed in California, where they visited Maria’s brother, Juan Silva, in Fresno, California. After a short stay, the family returned to Camargo and continued to work in the grocery store.
But Vicente, knowing he could build a better life in California, returned alone to Fresno in early 1976, and started working for Joe Saldivar at Saldivar’s Auto Shop. Joe Saldivar and his wife Irene, were instrumental in helping Vicente reunite with his wife and daughters in August 1976. Vicente continued to work tirelessly, developing and perfecting his skills in automotive shops as a body and fender journeyman. It’s impressive to say that all his learning was done hands on, without any formal training.
After working for multiple automotive shops, in 2002, Vicente retired from Michael Chevrolet-Toyota after working there for 13 years. The word “retirement” did not apply to Vicente, who continued to wake up early every morning wearing his working uniform, because according to him, “there was still a lot of work to do around the house.” Vicente loved to work with his hands, especially with wrought iron, compressors, power tools, welders, cement, wood, tile and paint. You would often find him working in the shed he built in his backyard. Vicente was known to build multiple fences, including in his home, his daughter’s homes, and built iron pieces for friends and their church, St. Anthony Maria Claret, where he and wife were members of the Guadalupana Society for many years. He was always looking for the next “project.”
Vicente loved to work on his car, his daughter’s cars and eventually, grandchildren’s cars. No one bought a car or truck without his approval, because he had impeccable knowledge of automobiles. He changed oil, rotated tires and always hand washed his cars, including his Ford Galaxy, his Toyota Ford Runner and his last vehicle, the Cadillac Escalade.
Even though Vicente was not a scholar, he was very bright and intelligent, he thought and functioned like an engineer. And even though Vicente was not in the military, he was disciplined, strict, and a honest. Vicente did not finish school himself, but he was a huge supporter of his daughter’s and his grandchildren’s school and pursuing higher education. He was their biggest supporter at each graduation and special celebration.
Vicente was a wealthy man in friends and family. He always went above and beyond for those he knew. He enjoyed his “galletas, and hot canela” in the winter time and he always carved the turkey on Thanksgiving. On Christmas Day, he loved to watch his grandchildren open their gifts.
Vicente’s trademark was his smile and soft laugh, something that he inherited from his own father, Jesus. His absence is painful, but his family takes comfort knowing that he lived a plentiful and meaningful life during his 86 years of life on Earth.
