Barbara was truly the life of every party. Known for her upbeat New York spirit and infectious laugh, she filled every room with energy, humor, and warmth. She loved to sing, dance, and crack jokes, always bringing laughter wherever she went.
Family was the center of Barbara's world. She loved fiercely and took great pride in bringing everyone together around the table. Holidays - especially Christmas and Thanksgiving - were her favorite traditions. She also reserved birthdays as extra-special occasions, loving the opportunity to focus all of her attention and love on one person and make them feel truly celebrated.
During the holidays, her kitchen would come alive with the aromas of authentic New York Italian cooking. Her legendary meals included baked ziti, linguine with clams, sausage and peppers, her famous meatballs, noodle pudding, rice pudding, coconut macaroons, and her unforgettable Italian pound cake - which undoubtedly contained 42 sticks of "butta!", the list could go on forever...Feeding her family and friends was one of the many ways Barbara showed her love - and boy did she love A LOT!
Her grandchildren will forever remember the egg creams their Grandmama made every time they came over and the warmth and laughter that filled her home.
Barbara was incredibly strong and resilient. She fought a long hard battle with cancer - challenges that would have taken down most people. Yet through it all, her illness never defined her. She continued to live with humor, love, and an unwavering spirit that touched everyone around her.
She had a knack for holding on to memories. A proud keeper of all things, Barbara was known for her "bottomless" pocketbook - often weighing as much as a suitcase, filled to the brim with anything one might need, because "ya neva know!" A yellow notepad was never far from reach, ready for lists, reminders, and notes about the people she loved.
She was famous for saying things like, "I don't know...what are ya gonna do...." or "Don't worry about it - just put it in the box!". She also loved reminding the people around her to always have something to look forward to; "take the vacation and share in the moments. Life is short - do what makes you happy!". Her words captured her outlook on life: find humor when you can, don't sweat the small stuff, and cherish the time you have together.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Frankie Smith; her sons, Joseph Cardinal and Michael Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Frankie Marie, Carley, and Joey; her great-granddaughter, Ember Anne; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her dearly.
