Beverly Jean Sikora, "Bev" as known by her friends and family, was born July 10, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to George and Mary C. Crothers. She was the youngest of three children. Helen, Robert "Bob" and Beverly grew up in Monroeville, PA on Center Road. I remember mom telling stories about living in Monroeville, about her brother teaching her how to ride a bike by pushing her down the hill on Pineview Drive and yelling “Ride or Die”. Bev was in the first graduating class of Gateway High School, You could see her and her friend Carol Kelly driving around town in her red convertible in the winter with the top down and the heat on. Mom trained to be a beautician like her mom, but ended up taking a job as a secretary at Mine Safety Appliances where she met George Sikora. Fun fact you may not know about mom is she was a hand model for Mine Safety Appliances.
Bev and George married and had one child, a daughter named Sherry. They relocated from the cold of Pittsburgh to the warmth of Miami in the 70’s where mom worked her way up through a local hospital, where she eventually retired as a billing supervisor. We often joked that the hospital changed names but mom remained a constant for 38 years. Even with all the hard work that she put in she never missed one of her daughter’s many softball or volleyball games.
After retirement and the death of her husband, mom relocated to Little Elm, Texas to be closer to her daughter, Sherry and son-in-law Marcus and especially her grandson Ajay. She worked for a brief time with her daughter, 3 days a week, and was involved with the Silver Sneakers program at the Y and made many good friends. In 2012 she suffered a stroke which affected her speech, but it only slowed her down for a little while. Mom’s favorite holiday was Christmas and every year she and my husband would see who could out prank each other with the gifts. One year she puts bricks in a box and gave them to Marcus, the next year he gave her a box that had a coffee maker in the shower on the outside.
Ajay called his grandma "Grammy" and she could be seen at all of his sports games, whether it was soccer, flag football, basketball or baseball, she was always there cheering him on. She did not care if it was 110 degrees in the Texas heat either.
Mom was a patient and gentle woman. She loved to sew and read. One of the many things she liked to do was to work on sewing projects with her sister, Helen and her sister-in-law, Joann. She was an amazing mother and grandmother. Mom’s cancer took her way before she should have gone, but she is at peace now and watching over her family and friends from above.
Bev Sikora will be missed every day and remembered by her daughter, Sherry Owens, son-in-law, Marcus Owens, grandson, Ajay Owens; her sister, Helen and her husband Joe Migitsch; brother, Robert and his wife Joann Crothers; Lorry and Scott Thompson, Peggy and Ken Hudson and many nieces and nephews: Hope, Brad, Doug, Tracy, Dan, Beth, Kristie, Valary
We will be taking mom home to Pittsburgh for services and burial. Please keep checking the site for further information.
Mom thought of school as very important and was so proud of her grandson’s accomplishments.
