August 30, 1946 – April 24, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard “Rich” Ames on April 24, 2025. Born on August 30, 1946, in Joplin, Missouri, Rich was a man whose life was defined by kindness, integrity, and unwavering strength.
A graduate of Joplin High School in 1964, Rich went on to earn his degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1968. Shortly thereafter, he entered the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant, proudly serving his country. He was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, where he rose to the position of Squadron Commander. After four years of honorable service, Rich transitioned to a career as a commercial pilot, beginning his long and distinguished journey with Southwest Airlines on March 10, 1975.
Beyond his professional achievements, Rich’s most cherished role was that of a devoted husband. He married the love of his life, Shelia Ames, on November 15, 1990, in beautiful Lake Tahoe. Their bond was one of true partnership, love, and mutual respect—a foundation that enriched both their lives immeasurably.
Rich's impact on those around him was profound. With a vibrant personality and ceaseless optimism, he had a way of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved. He was a source of inspiration and comfort to all who knew him, and his generous spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and former colleagues.
While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life truly well-lived—a life marked by service, love, laughter, and resilience. Rich’s legacy will continue to shine through the memories he created and the people he uplifted.
He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
Interment will be held, Friday, May 9th, 2025 at 2pm at Dallas/Ft. Worth National Cemetery located at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.
