The world lost my beloved mother, Delores Jean Cabrere, age 75, on December 23, 2024. Mommy passed away peacefully in our home (Little Elm, TX) surrounded by friends and family. Despite battling multiple chronic illnesses for most of her life, her heart remained strong. She loved us - abundantly.
Mommy was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on August 23, 1949, to her loving parents, Willie Mae (Briggs) and Eugene Minor. At the age of 13, after her mother passed away, Mommy vowed to care for her sisters, Darlene and Susan. I am reminded by the many stories of the sacrifices she made to support them over the years. She ensured their senior year in high school was memorable and helped create a magical prom experience that became a tradition for all the cousins in later years.
One of the greatest love stories ever told began when Mommy met Pop while attending Hayes Junior High School. From that point on, they were inseparable. Mommy and Pop were married for 52 years!
After graduating from South High School, Mommy and Pop spent several years in Frankfurt, Germany, while Pop served in the military. Upon returning to the States, Mommy worked as a hospital administrator at Cleveland Clinic. She was also very active in my elementary school, Memorial Park’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA), serving as Vice President and later being elected President before we moved to California. In California, Mommy worked at Los Alamitos Hospital and then Anaheim General Hospital, and attended Cerritos Community College. She was known for creating and organizing hospital luncheons that brought together nurses, doctors, and administrators.
Mommy retired when we relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, and devoted her time to supporting me in school. With only one car in our household, Mommy would drive Pop to work, and sit in the car and wait for me while I attended college classes. She and Pop later moved to Fayetteville and then Raleigh, North Carolina, where Mommy dedicated her time to supporting my nephew as a volunteer for the Miracle League association for special needs children and as an advocate and public speaker for autism at Meredith College. As my parents’ health declined, eventually she and Pop moved with my family to Texas.
Mommy’s life is measured by the number of people she met and touched over the years. We often called her phone a “hotline” as she maintained relationships with friends and family in every city she lived in, sending Christmas presents all over the world. If you knew Mommy, you would know she loved chocolate, jewelry, matching shoes and purses, clothes, knitting and crocheting, music (from R&B and gospel to even rap), and above everything else, YOU. She valued most, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and always …Pop.
In our hearts, she lives on, and we will forever honor the legacy of this remarkable wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, mentor, and “Gaga” who made a lasting impact on all those she encountered.
Mommy is survived by her son, Andre; her grandchildren, Emanuel Charles Cabrere and Antony Morris II; her sister, Susan Bentley; several nieces and nephews; and me, her daughter, Dr. Nicole Morris (Antony).
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emanuel Charles Cabrere; her father, Eugene Minor; her mother, Willie Mae Minor; her sister, Darlene Pickard; and her brother-in-law, Claude W. Bentley Jr.
A celebration of life visitation for Delores will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Stonebriar Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 10375 Preston Road, Frisco, TX 75033, followed by a celebration of life funeral from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
