HB was the second of three brothers, Harold (deceased) and Gene, of Norman, OK. The brothers grew up in Oklahoma City, OK. H.B. and Harold both attended Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City where H.B. graduated in 1946. H.B. and his older, physically larger, brother Harold, played football for Capitol High School. When Harold graduated, H.B. wore Harold’s jersey number. Thereafter, any player on the opposing team who held a grudge against his older brother, took it out on H.B. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS from College of Business and later gained his C.P.A. H.B. was as employed by Conoco for over 35 years where prior to retirement, he served as the Assistant Director of Marketing Accounting.
Gene, H.B.’s brother, is fourteen years younger than him. H.B.’s daughters recall that Gene graciously entertained them on visits to Oklahoma City when they were all younger. Gene remembers that H.B. always had a great sense of humor.
H.B. married Mary Jo (“Jody”) Farren on March 7, 1957. They had four daughters, Jackie King, Jo Hunter Hohensee, Patsy Schaumburg, and Jan Hunter Thomas. When his girls were younger, the family often went camping at Keystone Lake or Grand Lake in Oklahoma. If the girls ever forgot that Dad was a Marine, they were reminded when pitching the tent that could hold nine people. The tent was raised with military precision and attention to detail. The vacation did not begin until the tent was erected. When the vacationing did begin they all had fun skiing, fishing and relaxing.
In June of 1946, at the end of World War II, H.B. enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served as a Wireman at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California. Upon his discharge in June, 1947, H.B. joined the Marine Corps Reserve District 8. During the Korean War he was assigned to active duty on June 29, 1950. During this time he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the First Marine Division. He saw active combat from September 1950 until May 1951. His Division received a Presidential Citation for the amphibious seizure of the island of Wilmi-do, the city of Inch′on, and Kimp′o Airfield. The Citation stated that the Marines rendered “invaluable assistance in the capture of Seoul”. In May 27, 1951, H.B. was once again discharged to the Marine Corps Reserves District 8. H.B. remained in the Reserves until his retirement in 1972. He retired as a Major having served in the Marine Corps for over 20 years.
H.B. was a Marine, a wonderful husband and loving dad who retained his sense of humor for all of his life. He was an OU Sooner and a loyal Sooner fan. He loved football and was a high school football referee for a number of years. H.B. enjoyed fishing, playing golf and hunting. He took a fishing trip every year with just his buddies. A friend jokingly said it was how he could live the remaining 51 weeks in a house with five women.
H.B. was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Masonic Lodge, and he and Jody were long time members of First Baptist Church of Ponca City, Oklahoma.
H.B. was preceded in death by his parents Wavery and Margie Hunter; and Brother Harold Hunter .
