“Mike” was born in Amarillo, Texas, on October 7, 1947, to Joann and James Marr. An accomplished athlete through his middle school and high school days, he graduated from Amarillo High school in 1966 and went on to play football for the University of North Texas where he graduated with a Business Administration degree in 1970. Before hanging up his cleats, he continued his football career playing semiprofessionally with the Ft. Worth Braves and a short stint with the New Orleans Saints.
Mike owned a successful children’s clothing business in the 70’s and 80’s before taking up commercial real estate, where he worked for 30+ years. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his bike, his beloved dog, lattes, traveling and eating just about anything his son-in-law cooked.
However, the thing he enjoyed most was being a family man. Mike was a devoted son, brother to his sister Ronda, and friend to all he met. He was a beloved husband to his wife of 42 years, Barbara, and a doting father to this two children, Kate and Max. He loved taking them on camping trips through the YMCA programs they were involved in and biking with them around White Rock Lake. Mike was the ultimate “sports dad” filling the role of President of his son’s high school football booster club and the manager of his daughter’s travel soccer club. He was lovingly known as the ”soccer dad” to most of his daughter’s teammates throughout high school. He and Barb were at every game they could attend during their children’s college days, often traveling from Friday to Sunday across multiple states to catch each game. But, as proud as he was of all their athletic accomplishments, he was most proud of their budding families and adored the children he gained through marriage in his son-in-law, Tyler, and daughter-in-law, Tanya.
Of all his roles though, he most relished the one he gained in the last few years of his life - the role of “Popsie” to his two beautiful grandsons, Beau Michael and Brooks Keith. He loved them deeply and was eagerly awaiting the birth of his third grandson, Colton James, due this August.
His family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Allen, especially Dr. Amir Choudhry, Victorian Gardens of Frisco, and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- Centennial ICU for the compassion and care he was shown in his last days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am, May 27th, at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Tx. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.stonebriarfh.com for the Marr family.
