Richard Mark Clewis, lovingly known to all as Mark and Poppy to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025 in Little Elm, Texas, at the age of 69, surrounded by his devoted family. He bravely fought cancer with quiet strength and grace, embodying the very spirit by which he lived: “Slow and steady wins the race.”
Born on February 17, 1956, in Houston, Texas, Mark was the son of the late Richard Timothy Clewis Jr. and Catherine Bernice Clewis. He spent his early years between Houston and Dallas, ultimately settling back in Houston, where he raised his family and left an indelible mark on his community.
A proud graduate of the University of Houston, Mark was a lifelong fan of the Cougars, cheering faithfully for both the basketball and football teams. His Cougar pride ran deep, often sparking spirited conversations and uniting generations in his family.
Mark dedicated much of his professional life to the oil and gas industry, completing his career at Worley, where he built lasting friendships and had the unique privilege of working alongside his son Eric for 12 years. Though they didn’t work directly together, Mark treasured the opportunity to witness his son's professional growth and offer his quiet mentorship.
In retirement, Mark moved to Little Elm to be closer to his eldest son and grandchildren. His devotion to family was unwavering. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty four years, Sally Jean Clewis, and his three children, each of whom he was immensely proud of: Ryan (Jenna), Eric (Chelsea), and Kelly (Juan). One of his greatest life joys was seeing each of them find loving life partners, just as he had with Sally.
Mark's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Liam (10) and Adrienne (7), who brought him endless joy and laughter. He is also survived by his brother Robert Paul Clewis (Markie) and mother-in-law Mary Helen Byrnes, and is lovingly remembered by a large extended family and many close friends. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother Kelela Clewis, brother David L. Clewis, father-in-law Robert H. Byrnes, and nephew Corey Byrnes.
Deeply rooted in his faith, Mark lived a life of quiet integrity and service. He dedicated over 30 years to his local water board in Houston, serving in multiple roles, including President, and forging close community bonds along the way.
A passionate fan of Houston sports, Mark also enjoyed golf, history, and annual trips to the Texas Hill Country with his family. He nurtured individual connections with each of his children - golfing with Ryan, sharing a love of Liverpool soccer with Eric, and bonding over music with Kelly. His enduring love for animals could easily be seen with the strong bonds between a man and his dogs, especially with his golden retriever, Ben, and multiple others who he now joins in Heaven such as his boys Eli, Odin, and Tyler.
Those who knew Mark will remember him as wise, dependable, gentle, and loyal, with a razor-sharp wit, deep intellect, and a silent strength that made others feel safe and seen. He mentored youth, uplifted friends, and will always be the anchor in his family’s lives.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 12th at Prince of Peace Catholic Community (19222 Tomball Pkwy, Houston, TX 77070). Family will receive guests starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. and a luncheon immediately following in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local animal shelter.
