Steve was born on May 30, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas, to our parents, Don and Pat Burrus. He was their first child, and they loved him deeply. When Steve was still a baby, our dad’s job with GE took the family briefly to Schenectady, New York, before returning to Texas and settling in East Dallas on Parkhurst Drive.
Steve began his schooling at Victor Hexter Elementary in Lake Highlands. In 1960, the family moved to a brand-new home on Overdale Drive in far North Dallas when Dad began his long career at Texas Instruments. Steve transferred to Spring Valley Elementary, then went on to Richardson Junior High and Richardson High School, where he played clarinet in the school band. Although he faced social challenges, a powerful moment came in 1970 when he received a surprise standing ovation at graduation in Moody Coliseum — a testament to the quiet affection and respect many felt for him.
That fall, Steve enrolled briefly at Tyler Junior College, later attending classes at El Centro, Eastfield, and Richland Community Colleges. He had a strong interest in computer technology, even though he never pursued a career in that field.
One of Steve’s greatest passions was classical music. He was a devoted listener of WRR Classical 101.1 and developed an incredible knowledge of composers and historical dates. His memory for historical facts was remarkable, and attending symphony concerts was one of his greatest joys.Steve also had a keen interest in politics and occasionally volunteered at local polling places.
Throughout most of his life, he lived with our mom, and their bond was very special. He loved being with family, and we were blessed to have him as our big brother. His kind heart and presence brought us closer, especially after Mom passed.
Though Steve has left this life, he remains forever in our hearts — our big brother, a gentle soul who is now at peace, embraced in God’s everlasting love and care. ❤️
