Kundanji was my younger sister, Priti's husband. She went through a long, painful and protracted illness. Throughout this difficult period he looked after Priti with love, care and devotion. We shall, forever, remain grateful to him for this kindness.
He was a generous and large hearted man and a gracious host. We have experienced his hospitality during our numerous visits to US.
May God give him Moksha and strength to Indu, Sonia, Ritu and Ronnie to bear this loss with courage and fortitude.

Viran loved to walk the neighborhood.  I can remember how much he enjoyed playing Bocce and he was very good at it.  He will be missed.

We met Bhai Saheb in Oklahoma City Temple, in 1989. After short conversation, we found that  we were both IIT Roorkee graduates and he was my senior. Immediately out of respect, I started calling him Bhai Saheb. Late,  he invited us at his house, where we met his friends who became my friends as well.
He continued as our older brother, all along, advising us in all aspects of life. These had been very useful  to us. By nature, he had always been very polite, helpful and respectful to everyone. 
We will miss his presence, however, memories will survive. Wishing him peace in heaven.

Kundan ji was my loving brother. We spent time together since childhood. The memories go back to 1950s when I used to visit Fatehpur (my Nana’s home). We used to play together in front of Fatehpur Tahsil under the loving care of my Nana ji and Kundan ji’s father. Shri Lakshmi Narain (Kundan ji’s father) was an artist par excellence. I can never forget love and loving care, I received from his father and mother. 
I visited Kundan ji along with my son’s family and my wife in Oklahoma City in 2004 and attached is a picture from that trip. 
I offer condolences on my behalf and on behalf of extended “Rama Niwas” family -- many people from Pratapgarh, Allahabad, and various cities in India. May God take care of him hereafter!

We are deeply saddened at the demise of our beloved Chachaji. The fond memories of his affection become fresh in mind, from our many trips to Oklahoma City. My father and he are cousins, more like brothers. The picture below is from 1990 when we visited OK City, and Chacha ji, being Baba to my son, performed the auspicious annaprashan ceremony. We will sorely miss his love and many loving interactions and conversations we had over the years. Mr. Viren was our jija (our means me and my brother Vinay).  Back when we were five years old we couldn’t say Jija.   We thought it was Jijja (like Jijj-jaw!).    Little did I know that we will end up calling him Jijja ji for the rest of our lives.

My earliest recollections are actually of his father who kind of looked like Jijjaw ji too, just an older version.    He used to visit us from Orai.   1975 or so.   Later on when Sonia came to La Martiniere College in Lucknow, he used to visit us more regularly.   Also Jijja ji’s brother “Mister” would also make the trip to visit with Sonia on weekends.   

The first time when we learned our Jijjaw ji was actually Virendra and not Kundan Ji, we disapproved of his “new” name!!

Such great memories and pictures I want to share but they allow only one image!    Doesn’t do justice to my Jijjaw ji!   Image shows Sonia with us over weekends in Lucknow after her escape from Boarding School, circa 1977.

Kundan ji (Virendra) was technically our damaad that is son in-law.  I speak for myself and my late husband DC or Bhaiya ji.   In the early years Kundan ji and his wife Priti stayed with us in the US.   Based on the Carrhart stamp on the pictures it must have been August 1970 which is when he came alone.   Priti and then Shilpa (now Sonia) joined in October 1970.   See image.   

This is when I got to know him better.   He loved his mother, Amma.  He used to help his mother getting the breakfast ready.    He would genuinely brag about his mother in his typical soft demeanor with a dimple claiming that his mother could “create” cashews and pistachios out of everyday flour (maidah) such magic his Amma held!  

Much later whenever we would visit the US, from India, Kundan ji was the first “guest” (damaad factor!) we would remember him each time.   We would wait to hear from him.   

I guess now I will be waiting forever and ever.   Best wishes to Indu ji, Sonia and Ritu, their families and Ronnie.

For the last 6+ years we have been privileged to see Viren often out walking his dog Raja.  In addition, we played Bocce Ball with Viren and his team won first place several times.  

Viren will be remembered and missed for his kindness and thoughtfulness to us all at Isabella Village.

We are very sad to hear the passing of Virendra Chandra Ji. We met him and his family when in moved to Oklahoma City in 1978 when we were in Norman Oklahoma (1977-1983). We became very good family friend. He was always in our thoughts and talked to him on phone about 2 years ago when we were visiting Dallas, TX to my daughter. His memory will always be with us. We pray God to rest his soul in peace, and give his family, especially, his wife and daughters Ritu and Sonia enough courage to get through such a difficult time.

Masar Viren’s life was a life full of celebration and accomplishments. 
Although our time together was limited, we will always hold fond memories of his warm and loving smile and gentle nature. 


I first met Virendra Chandra (later in our companionship, referred to as Mahatma Ji) when he visited my home in NJ to plan the wedding of his lovely daughter, Ritu, to my son, Rajiv.  My late wife, Madhuri, and myself, enjoyed that joyful memory with him that afternoon.

I later had the chance to visit Viren with his wife, Indu, in Oklahoma City for several weeks.  Their hospitality and warmth exceeded that of my own relatives.  He guided me on an impressive culinary tour across the varied restaurants that Oklahoma City offered to broaden my dining experience. His passion for food was infectious.

Every minute between Oklahoma and NJ felt very natural in his company. Even in his last month of life, Virendra Chandra spent our conversations advising me on care of my knee pain from his experience. His primary concern always seemed to be my well-being.

I pray to our God Ram Ji & Hanuman Ji to bless his soul.  I will miss him, though he lives on in his beautiful daughters, and grandchildren, Surina, Dhilin, Shaan & Ryaan (Ram & Lakhan).

Kundan ji “Virendra” ka gharaylu naam tha.   Vay hamaray damaad hotay thay.  Aisay damaad jo hum logon kay bahut kareeb thay.   Madhurtaa, saraltaaa, aatmiyataa svaroop thay.  Shorooati daur may vay aur unki patni Priti hamaaray saath America rahay thay.  Isi daur may mujhay pataa chala ki vay kitnay prakhar buddhi thay.    Vay Town Planner thay aur apni lagan kay kaarun vay America may jahan gayay apni jagah banaatay gayay.   

Vay pukkay desh bhakt thay aur unhay apni bhaasha aur sanskaar par naaz tha.    Vay vichaaron kay dhani thay aur bahut mehnati.    Gharayloo kaam may bhi haath bataatay thay, apni amma ko bayhudd pyaar kartay thay, pita key aagya ka aadur kartay thay.     Kum say kum samay may unhoonay apni jagah banaayi.    Apni amma ko yaad kartay huay naashtaa banaanay may muddad kartay thay.     Kahtay meri ma kaju-pishtaa maiday say banaa leti hain.    Mujhay paraatha banaanay may muddad kartay thay.   Jab mein khaana banaati tubb vay bachhon ka khyaal rakhtay.   Kundan ji Sona thay, voh bhi kharay.    Shoorooati daur may badi bahaaduri say unhoonay her kaam seekha aur apnay saathiyon ki, rishtaydaaron ki madad ki.    

Vay chaahtay thay ki Bitiya Sonia ko Hindostani culture millay issliyay unhoonay Sonia ko La Martiniere kay boarding school may rakha.  Uski local guardian mujhay banaaya.   Prati saptaah may usay apnay ghar laati thi jahan usay ghar kaa maahaul milltay thaa.   Kundan ji dhyaan rakhtay thay Bitiya Sonia ko akelapan naa lagay.  

Hum log jab bhi America jaatay tow subsay pehlay Kundan ji yaad aatay.   Kundan ji aisay mehmaan thay jinka intezaar hamayshaa raha.

 Shri Virendra Chandra, who went by the popular name “VC” among the University of Roorkee (now IIT-Roorkee) colleagues, got acquainted with me in the fall of 1959 at his initiation ceremonies upon entering the university in Bachelor of Architecture program. I had entered the same program in 1958. 
 Later, in the capacity of lecturer in City Planning at School of Architecture, New Delhi, I was appointed as his guide to his chosen subject of thesis-the last major project to qualify successfully to this post-graduate program. He diligently worked to complete the thesis. 
 Then, we had the opportunity to become neighbors in a rental family apartments building in Syracuse, New York, upon immigrating to the USA.
 He would gladly pick up our son, Vikas, from the Newark airport and drop him the next day into JFK airport for going to Delhi every summer, and do the same upon return from Delhi. One summer, when Vikas, then 10 in 1977, arrived at his home, Vikas started crying, and upon enquiring by his wife Preeti, he told her he missed his mom. Preeti told us that she cried with him, too, to comfort him. We had so much appreciated VC’s family for this invaluable help for years. 
 He had invited us to both his daughters’ weddings in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which we had lovingly attended. 
 He used to call me GuruJi primarily because of being the guide to his thesis, although I lectured the classes on variety of curriculum courses. He would always touch my feet following  the old Hindu tradition of the Teacher-Disciple relationship of mutual respect, whether he was to receive me at the airport or meet me at any public/private gathering. 
 His gentle and sweet nature, honesty in his eyes, his infrequent burst of outspokenness and an amazing demeanor that is hard to find in modern times will be a treasured memory in our hearts. 
 We will miss him deeply….in the past, he had reminded me many times that “GuruJi-you don’t call me, I have to call you…”.

Our Village People used to sit on our porches a lot--much more than any of us do now--and we would see Viren walking his little white dog every day.  We got to know him at Game Day when we played Mexican Train or Hand and Foot.  Viren was a sly/shy player.  His eyes would dance when he had a move that would surprise us.  And he was always sweet and soft spoken and we loved him in IV.

We will miss you, Viren.

Viren you will be missed by neighbors and friends.  You always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. 

As the youngest brother in a family of 4 brothers and a sister, Kundan (Viren Chandra) dada was always very affectionate and caring to me as we spent our childhood in our hometown in Orai(UP, India) . As a humble person with strong family values, Kundan dada travelled frequently to India despite living in US for major part of his life, to meet family and relatives. He supported us both emotionally and financially whenever I needed help. 
Indu bhabhi, Shilpa(Sonia), Ritu and Ronnie - Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, you are very close in our thoughts and prayers.
Kundan (meaning gold in Hindi) dada stayed true to his name and will be greatly missed, but his warmth, kindness and gentle spirit will be remembered forever.

I met Viren in Kenya when he came visiting with my youngest sister Indu. He lovingly called me Didi and I shall always remember him as a calm and loving person who always smiled. Viren’s presence shall be missed by Indu’s family in Kenya. God bless his soul

To remember dear Kundanji Jijaji,  I can remember his marriage to my sadly departed Priti Jiji all those years ago at the Kohti at Sitapur , as young boy at the time it was a memorable event for me . 
Communal family  shelling of maunds of Green Peas , as caterers were not used in those far off days .
A great occasion at the time .
Priti Jiji so sadly left us so early but their daughter Sonia was a joy to both of them.

Time and distance now divide international families which have spread far and wide , Barbara and I so fortunate to have been able to meet and stay with  Kundanji Ji and Indu ji  about 5 years ago , while driving across Kansas , Texas etc ,  we also had the pleasure to meet up with Sonia and her lovely family and enjoy a meal together .
He was a kind and gentle  person , and will always be remembered fondly . Hari Om.
