Charles Robert Hyatt, 85 passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018. Charles was born in Humeston, Iowa to Charles Nelson Hyatt, M.D. and Genella Elizabeth Hyatt (Gaddis) the oldest of three sons. He spent his childhood in this small town in Iowa with the exception of three years when his family lived in San Antonio, TX, San Luis Obispo, CA and Yuma, AZ due to his father’s service in the Army during WWII. Following Graduation from Humeston High School, Charles attended Drake University graduating in 1955. Charles met his future wife, Carolyn Williams while attending Drake. They were united in marriage at the First Christian Church in Pleasantville, Iowa on December 25, 1955. Soon after their wedding, Charles reported for active duty as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. They spent the next twenty years making friends and exploring the many places across the US and Canada where they were stationed. During this time, they welcomed a daughter, Jacque and two sons, Bob and Doug.
Volkswagens, camping and narrow gauge railroads were important to the many adventures the family has had throughout the years. Charles enjoyed traveling and connecting with people both locally and internationally. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lt. Colonel in 1976 and made a final move that brought the family to one of their favorite places, Fort Collins, Colorado. He then spent 19 years with the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1995. Retirement this time brought more time to travel, maintain his prized VW Thing, complete the many home improvement projects and spend time with his grandchildren.
Charles will be truly missed. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn; daughter, Jacque; sons, Bob (Karen) and Doug (Kristine); Grandchildren Jeffrey (Carissa) and Kristin; Brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Linda; nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John and sister in law, Mary Jo.
Charles life will be celebrated with a Visitation on Tuesday, August 14 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Allnut-Drake Road Chapel, 650 W Drake Rd, Fort Collins, CO. A graveside service honoring Charles and his military service will be held on Wednesday, August 15 at 10:15 AM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Those attending the service at Fort Logan are asked to arrive at 9:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Air Force Aid Society.
