Diana was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 11, 1942, to Ruth Evelyn Moon and Dale Edwin Moon. She was very close to her family, and she and her four siblings spent endless hours playing cards and board games and watching westerns on the television.
After graduating college with a degree in education, Diana lived in California, then Utah, and finally settled in Colorado. In addition to teaching, for many years she mentored troubled adolescents; she took in numerous teens, and not only provided them with a loving home, but taught them how to take care of her other passion, her horses.
Once settled in Colorado, Diana found her true calling as a mother. Her first born, Destry, was her pride and joy. When Destry was born, Diana was teaching at a one-room schoolhouse in Virginia Dale, and the small family lived right there at the teacherage for many years. All ages were in the same room of that schoolhouse, and a popular recess adventure was searching for (and finding!) stone arrowheads in the rugged terrain around the school. As the family grew, Diana and her husband moved to a home in Virginia Dale. There Deyne and Deramie were born, and her family was complete.
Diana and the children eventually moved to Fort Collins, where Diana taught for 30 years at Beattie Elementary School. She loved her students almost as much as her own children, and she could have continued there for much longer; the only thing leading her into retirement was the birth of her first grandchild. After retiring, Diana spent the remainder of her days with her children and grandchildren: watching soccer matches, volunteering in classrooms, attending school parties and field trips, traveling with them to the beach and to Disneyland, and teaching them to play cards and to bake. Diana will forever be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Diana is survived by her four siblings, Dale Moon, Michael Moon, Susan Moon, and Debbie Moon; two children, Deyne Nicholson and Deramie Kaup; and four grandchildren, Bryce Kaup, Kaylee Kaup, Ella Kaup, and Samuel Nicholson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Destry Nicholson.
Services will be at 11:00 am at Resthaven Funeral Home and Memory Gardens.
