Donald (Don) was born June 2, 1954 to Almon and Ann Scribner in Mount Clemens, MI. He grew up in Armada, MI graduating from Armada High School and furthering his education at Western Michigan University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Physical Education.
Don enjoyed all of his years growing up in Armada MI. He shared many fond memories with his brother Dennis Scribner which included hanging out with the neighborhood kids going house to house, playing baseball, riding go-karts at Go Kart Jungle, and sharing the outdoor adventures in the family/neighbors’ woods. Don expressed his unconditional love to his mother Ann Scribner throughout the years by sending cards and placing multiple phone calls daily. Don was even known to make unannounced surprise visits to see his mother just to experience her reaction.
Don moved from Michigan to Colorado in January of 1977. He was attracted to Colorado for its beauty and sunshine and knew when he moved to Colorado it was going to be his final destination. Don formed a lot of close personal relationships between Colorado, Michigan and all parts of the country. For the people who knew Don Scribner, he was a talker and loved personal interaction with people.
On August 22, 1987, Donald Leroy Scribner was united in marriage with Kryste Diane Korf in Fort Collins, Colorado where they began their life together. On July 22, 1988, Don and Kryste welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Karrissa LeAnn Scribner, and on July 11, 1992, their handsome son, Kohlman Almon Scribner was born, a spitting image of his dad. Both children were born at Poudre Valley Hospital.
Don was a very active man. He was introduced into the Kingdom Man Retreat by his close friends, where he gained his faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Don was a very spiritual man who believed when his number was called, it was his time no matter what the circumstances were. Don enjoyed spending quality time with his family as he watched his son, daughter, and grandchildren grow. He provided guidance based on his vision of family values and insight of how amazing “you” can make life be.
Don enjoyed all sporting events. Hunting and fishing with his son were his favorite pasttimes. Don would share stories of traveling, riding his motorcycle, and taking trips to the cabin with friends. Karrissa remembers times skiing with her dad. Dad would say, “Ride in the single lift line so we don’t have to wait so long.” As we were obedient children, we did what we were told, and then realized that it was not any shorter or faster, because we could see Dad chatting it up with some random person in that single lift line he told us to be in. As you know, our dad was a talker. But in the end, Dad (hauling ass down the snow-covered slopes) would beat us to the bottom. Don was also an avid gardener who shared his produce with neighbors that walked by his home. “Pick produce and pick a weed” was his motto. His display of his garden was his passion. His front lawn was tilled and made into a garden bed. He said, “If I am going to water it, I’m going to eat it.” He was a self-motivated/self-sufficient man who had many talents, from using his produce from his garden for canning jams and mustards; and canning meat, using the “family secret” recipe which he learned from his mother-in-law, Lela Korf who he adored and cherished.
Don was very well known in the Fort Collins/Loveland community for his handy man services (ILFIXIT) “If I can’t fix it, it ain’t broken.” Don was a master of analyzing what needed to be done to provide a solution for any “big” or “small” construction project. Even though he maintained a full-time job he still made time to work side jobs to help others.
Don was a devoted son, father, grandfather, and uncle. He made it to all the family events despite his busy schedule. Don was a very supportive father for his children, even if he didn’t agree with all the choices that were made. He was a “rock bottom” kind of guy. Don wanted his children to experience life and if there was failure – learn from it, accept it, and move forward. His compassion and understanding were displayed in everything he did. Don had the ability to start a conversation with a stranger and end that conversation with a friend.
Don is preceded in death by his father, Almon Scribner, grandparents, George and Catherine Pavlov, Basil and Daisy Scribner, father and mother in law, Lloyd and Lela Korf and many aunts and uncles.
Don is survived by his mother, Ann Scribner of Armada, MI; brother, Dennis Scribner of Armada, MI; daughter, Karrissa Scribner of Loveland, CO; son, Kohlman Scribner of Loveland, CO; niece, Emily Scribner of Armada MI; and two grandchildren, Skylar and Klayton VanderVliet.
Please remember this wonderful man as he always said, “Don’t tell me, Show me”.
