Born to Willis Lewis and Myrtle (Lingerfelt-Lewis) Phillips on January 25, 1933 in Langdon, Missouri, Doris was welcomed home by three older brothers – Thurman, Andrew and Daw Lewis.
Doris’ father Willis died in an accident before she was born and her mother later remarried Kenneth Phillips, who raised Doris and her brothers. Myrtle and Kenneth later had a son, Doris’ half-brother Keith Phillips.
Doris left Missouri when she was 18 and moved to Castle Rock, Colo. with her brother Daw and her sister-in-law Betty. It was there that Doris met Theodore "Ted" Steele. They were married in March of 1955 and made their home in Parker, Colo. until their growing family took them north to get away from the encroaching city. Ted and Doris eventually made their home in the country around Wellington, Colo., where they raised their three children Keith, Teresa and Mark. They were later surrounded with grandchildren, whom they cherished.
Doris had a big heart and opened her home to many people throughout the years, many of whom are all considered family to this day.
Doris was an avid reader and spent a lot of time buried in books. She also loved to crochet and creating afghans was a passion. She loved to learn, which kept her mind sharp right up to the end. Throughout her life, she took online courses in psychology, interior design and plant science and achieved an associates degree in Specialized Business in 1988.
Doris was preceded in death by her father Willis Lewis, mother Myrtle Phillips, step-father Kenneth Phillips, brothers Thurman, Andrew and Daw Lewis, half-brother Keith Phillips, and her husband of 60 years, Ted Steele.
Doris leaves behind her son Keith Steele (Abra); daughter Teresa Steele; son Mark Steele (Lisa Bard); grandchildren Jason Mott, Corri Mott, Kelly Quam, Tairan Pellerin (Kenny), Kaitlyn Steele-Flood (Conor) and Dustyn Steele; and great-grandchildren Logan, Addison and Hannah.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to Pathways Hospice. Memories of Doris and words of condolence for her family are welcome at resthavencolorado.com.
