Doug was born on March 11, 1948, in Highland Park, Michigan, the son of Charles and Julia (Melnek) Gawne. He graduated from Ferndale High School and went on to study Business Administration, Management and Operations at Ferris State University, Wayne State University, and the University of Phoenix.
Driving west in his twenties, Doug fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, waved goodbye to Michigan, and spent the rest of his life in Colorado.
Doug dedicated his professional life to the construction industry, working as a skilled bricklayer, owning his own brick masonry company and operating as chief estimator for an excavation company. Known for his craftsmanship and work ethic, he also shared his knowledge with others through teaching bricklaying at Warren Occupational Technical Center in Denver.
A lifelong member of the NRA, Doug was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, spending time in the mountains and gardening. He also enjoyed Corvettes, poker, guitar, and sharing stories that often ended in laughter. His smile and sense of humor were legendary—he brought joy and levity wherever he went.
Doug is now reunited with his beloved wife Jackie (O’Donnell) Gawne who preceded him in death by just a couple months, and his loyal canine companion, Laddy.
He is survived by his children Jesse Gawne (Julie), Lalanya Bridges (Michael), and Joshua Gawne (partner Tori); stepchildren Chris Tullos (partner Casie) and Patrick Tullos (Sierra); granddaughters Geneva and Florence Bridges; and his brother Larry Gawne (Marilyn). He is also survived by his nephews, extended family, close friends, and sweet dog Charlie.
Doug will be remembered for his warmth, his laughter, and the deep love he had for his family and the outdoors.
A private celebration of life will be held by his family at one of his favorite fishing spots in the Rocky Mountains. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, an organization near and dear to Doug.
