Georgina Morales Ellis

Georgina Morales Ellis (Georgie) passed away on June 25th in Fort Collins, Colo., shortly after reaching her milestone 100th birthday. She passed peacefully in her sleep just days after celebrating her birthday with many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends around her.

Born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Georgie spent most of her life in San Juan. She had a passion for learning which carried through her entire life. She studied and discussed topics that interested her including politics, science, history, health, and philosophy, just to name a few. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Puerto Rico, Georgie became a teacher and taught history and social sciences in all grades K-12 throughout her career as well as at a vocational school. A single mother for many years, Georgie was tenacious and determined and eventually also received a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis on Social Studies and Counseling from NYU.

During her early years of teaching in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, Georgie met Ramón Vigo Díaz, to whom she was married for 18 years; they had three children. After her marriage ended, Georgie supported her children and encouraged their learning and growth. All three eventually moved to the U.S. to continue their education. She had many lifelong friends, several of whom she met through co-founding the first PFLAG chapter in San Juan. Later in life she married Juan Miguel Ortíz, to whom she was married for 18 years.

In 1996, Georgie’s children encouraged her to move to the U.S. in her retirement, and she moved in with her daughter, Alma Vigo-Morales, in Fort Collins, Colo. Georgie made new friendships in Fort Collins and was a member of several clubs and organizations. She focused on her many interests – keeping up with politics, reading, creative writing, sewing, crocheting, arts and crafts. Georgie always had a cat companion and best friend to dote on. Georgie also lived in Baltimore, Md., with her other daughter, María Vigo McMacken, where she enjoyed sharing in many gardening activities, playing games and spending time with her great grandchildren. Georgie had a passion for astronomy, an interest that she shared with her son, Ramón Jorge Vigo. She loved having many long conversations and speculating about the nature of the universe with him.

Georgie will be remembered for her wit, determination, intellect, and endearing sense of humor. She is survived by her children María Vigo McMacken, Alma Vigo-Morales (Barb) and Ramón Jorge Vigo (Jessica); eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Su tenacidad y determinación la llevaron a eventualmente recibir un grado de maestría en educación de NYU con énfasis en estudios sociales y consejería, aún siendo madre sola por muchos años.

Durante sus primeros años de maestra enseñando en Orocovis, Puerto Rico, Georgie conoció a Ramón Vigo Díaz con quien se casó, y durante su matrimonio de 18 años tuvieron tres hijos. Cuando ese matrimonio terminó, Georgie persistió con el apoyo a sus hijos, estimulando su educación y desarrollo. Los tres hijos eventualmente se trasladaron a los E.U. para continuar su educación. Georgie tuvo muchas amistades de por vida, y otras muy duraderas que las estableció mientras ayudó a fundar el primer capítulo de PFLAG en San Juan. Mas tarde en su vida, Georgie se casó con Juan Miguel Ortiz y el matrimonio duró otros 18 años.

En el 1996 sus tres hijos la alentaron a mudarse a los E.U. durante su retiro, y ella asintió, instalándose en la casa de una de sus hijas, Alma Vigo-Morales, en Fort Collins, Colorado. En Fort Collins Georgie entabló muchas mas amistades, y se incorporó a varios clubes y organizaciones. Durante este tiempo logró enfocarse en muchos de sus intereses- asuntos políticos del momento, lectura, escritura creativa, costura, crochet, arte y artesanías, y siempre estuvo acompañada de una adorada gatita como su mejor amiga. Georgie también vivió parte del tiempo en Baltimore, Maryland con su otra hija, María Vigo McMacken, donde disfrutó mucho de un jardín placentero, de jugar juegos que le gustaban y de deleitarse al pasar tiempo y celebraciones con sus nietas y biznietos. La astronomía fue siempre otro de sus intereses y pasiones, algo que compartió mucho, y en particular con su hijo, Ramón Jorge Vigo, durante conversaciones y especulaciones sobre la naturaleza del universo.

Georgie siempre será recordada por su sabiduría, determinación, su intelecto y su encantador sentido del humor. Le sobreviven sus hijos María Vigo McMacken, Alma Vigo-Morales (Barb) y Ramón Jorge Vigo (Jessica); ocho nietos y 11 bisnietos.
