Hugh grew up in South Haven, Michigan and enlisted in the US Army after high school. He served for three years and was in the Vietnam War 1965-1966. He was a helicopter door gunner and received the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Marksman (Rifle M-1) Medal. After his honorable discharge, he attended Michigan State University.
Hugh’s career in the grocery business started at his stepfather’s neighborhood grocery store when he was 15 years old. He “graduated” to work at A&P (Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) ending as an assistant manager. He also was a store manager for Kroger (Houston, TX) and Fry’s in Tempe, AZ. The bulk of Hugh’s career was spent with food brokerages in retail operations, as business development manager/sales, and as retail merchandiser. He was associated with Advantage Solutions, CBG, Acosta, Roadrunner Brokerage, and Co-Sales Company where he got his start in the food brokerage business. Hugh was currently with Advantage Solutions as retail merchandiser for the Mars Petcare Division.
Hugh loved the grocery business. It was an exciting career for him which provided many adventures with job transfers from Phoenix, AZ to Boise, ID, Minneapolis, MN, and Fort Collins, CO. Most importantly, Hugh cherished the brotherhood and lifelong friendships he made. Hugh was very grateful that his last transfer was to work the Northern Colorado/Wyoming area and to be near our family. His hobbies included golf, avid sports fan, and a voracious reader.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; son - Jeff (Marnie), grandsons – Benjamin and Lucas, Noblesville, Indiana; son - Sean (Jennifer), grandson - Liam, Johnstown, CO.
There will be no services per Hugh’s wishes. Donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, or the Larimer County (Colorado) Humane Society.
