Born Joan Edith Smith on October 3, 1935, in Oakland, Iowa, to Kenneth Smith and Edith Pash, Joan was a woman defined by her devotion to others. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who dedicated much of her life to the care of those she loved. A woman of steady strength, she outlived and personally cared for three military veteran husbands—Mr. Lee McMurray, Mr. Ronald Jones, and Mr. Edward Kloke—until their respective passings.
When she wasn’t caring for her family, Joan found joy in the simple things. She loved painting, Bob Ross, and country music, and was rarely seen without a fresh, hot cup of coffee in her hand.
Joan was preceded in death by her son, Jeff McMurray. Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Sherman Clausen (Thelma), and six of her seven children: Jeffrey Bergstrom (Linda), Paul McMurray (Nancy), Mark McMurray (Heidi), Kevin McMurray, Bryan McMurray (Deedee), and Jamie Jillson (Josh). She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary McMurray.
Her legacy continues through her eleven grandchildren—Nichole, Ryan, Sean, Jonathan, Heather, Austin, Kaila, Kody, Kaitlynn, Joshua, and Gabriel—as well as numerous great-grandchildren and dear friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home in Fort Collins, Colorado on Thursday, March 26, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Joan's life will be celebrated the following day, Friday, March 27th, 2026 at 1pm, after which she will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
