Julia "Judy" Keiss of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, joy, and unwavering dedication to family, education, and community service.
Born in 1933 to Homer and Jane Thompson in Colorado Springs, Judy grew up alongside her brothers Larry and Tom, both of whom preceded her in death. Her academic journey led her to Colorado A&M College (now Colorado State University), where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955. It was there she met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Keiss.
Following graduation, Judy and Bob married in a military ceremony at Fort Carson. With characteristic humor, Judy often described herself as a "Mule Skinner's wife," as Bob commanded the last mule pack artillery unit in the U.S. Army. Their early years together included time in Leadville, where Judy began her teaching career while Bob was stationed at Camp Hale. After brief stays in Colorado Springs and Laramie, Wyoming, they settled in Fort Collins to raise their children, Carrie and Chris.
Judy's passion for education flourished in Fort Collins, where she worked first as a substitute teacher before teaching full time at O'Dea Elementary School. A career opportunity for Bob later took them to Colorado Springs for four years, but the deep friendships they had formed drew them back to Fort Collins.
Retirement for Judy was merely a transition to new adventures. She and Bob spent winters in their beloved Port Aransas, Texas, and summers exploring Colorado's mountains, even serving as campground hosts at Big Creek Lakes for two seasons. Ever energetic, Judy became a partner and eventually sole owner of Repeat Boutique, a consignment clothing store in Fort Collins, which perfectly suited her love of connecting with people.
A naturally social and athletic woman, Judy thrived in community organizations and physical activities. She was particularly dedicated to PEO, a philanthropic organization supporting women's education. Her athletic pursuits included tennis, golf, swimming, skiing, and pickleball. Throughout her life, her faith remained a cornerstone, one she generously shared with those around her.
After 68 years of marriage, Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob. She leaves behind her daughter Carrie (Ruben), son Christopher (Mary Ann), seven grandchildren: Emily (Matt), Annalyn (Aaron), David (Eira), Katharine, Andres (Audrey), Andrew (Evangeline), and Abby, along with four great-grandchildren.
Judy will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, boundless energy, and joyful outlook that brightened the lives of all who knew her. Her family will cherish memories of camping trips, river adventures, skiing excursions, fishing days, and countless family dinners shared over the years.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Karen Brown and the staff at Sunnyside, whose compassionate care made Judy's final years both meaningful and joyful, attending to her physical and spiritual needs with exceptional dedication.
A celebration of Judy's life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Fort Collins Senior Center, 1200 Raintree Drive, followed by a light reception.
Attendees are encouraged to wear bright clothing in celebration of Judy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Fort Collins PEO Chapter G. Checks can be mailed to Becky Helbaum, 3309 Buntwing Lane, Fort Collins, CO 80524.
