December 18, 2020. Leona was born in Alamosa Colorado on August 14, 1932. The oldest of
three sisters of a farming family from the San Luis Valley, she lived much of her early life
there. After graduating with honors from Hooper High School, she met her husband John
Brubacher. They were married June 15, 1951 at Leona’s parents home near Hooper Colorado.
During their 69 years of marriage, they raised four children and have lived in Julesburg and
Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and in Lincoln Nebraska and Madison Wisconsin. Following
retirement in 1986, they moved to Ft. Collins.
During her life she was a very supportive mother of all four of her kids activities, learning to
ski along with them, pitching the baseball, judging gymnastic meets, driving them to
swimming, piano lessons and band practices all the while teaching them common sense and
courtesy. She tried her hardest to help all of them with the new math. While busy with the
kids she still found time to be in bowling leagues, play volleyball and square dance.
She was able to travel to over forty-five states, including Hawaii, plus visiting Canada and
Mexico. Leona was strong in her faith and a very active member in the Methodist Church. She
taught vacation bible school several summers while her children were young. In recent years
she was involved with the Christ United Methodist Church of Ft Collins.
Leona will be dearly missed and is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, her children
Rodney (Pam) Brubacher, Karen (John) Sprengle, Debra (Michael) Flynn, Robert (Karen)
Brubacher; her sister Winnie Schwartz, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ethel Turman and her sister, Roberta Kobernick.
No memorial service is planned at this time. A celebration of Leona’s life will be held at a
later post-pandemic date.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Christ
United Methodist Church of Ft . Collins.
