Lois Lucas Martin died July 27th, 2024, in Windsor, CO at 100 years of age. She was born December 4th, 1923, in Throop, PA. to Frank Gendle and Elizabeth Hills Lucas. She was a graduate of Throop High School, Dickinson Junior College and Marywood College. A Junior Certificate of Music was earned at the Scranton Conservatory of Music. She was employed by the Thyroid Cancer Committee of the American Goiter Association in Albany, NY, and then by Colorado State University in the Endocrine Section of the Chemistry Department as a research assistant and secretary. While at CSU she also pursued graduate studies. It was here at CSU that she met her future husband Robert P. Martin. They were married on June 28, 1952, in Ft. Collins. While Robert pursued his doctorate at the University of Utah, she worked at Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City. Their son, Scott, was born in Salt Lake City during that time. The three of them went to Basel, Switzerland, where Robert had a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Basel. While there, their daughter, Elisabeth (Lisa) was born. They returned to Fort Collins in 1957 where they remained except for a one-year sabbatical in Boston.
Lois worked in various business capacities, including practice manager, in the surgical offices of Drs. Henson, Wise, Otteman and Tutt. For many years she was an active member of Foothills Unitarian Church, the CSU Women’s Association, Friends of the Library and was a charter member of Poudre Landmark. She volunteered at many of her children’s activities and Crossroads Safehouse. Music, art, theatre and reading provided her with much pleasure as did Wordscape later in life. The first computer in her 70s was no match for her nor was the iPad and learning to text to keep up with the grandchildren. She remained incredibly sharp even though she reached the century mark.
Lois loved being a mother, aunt, grandmother and in her last 5 years- great grandmother! She was always willing to fill up the station wagon with kids to go to her house, events, games, and concerts. Elegance in dress and entertaining were her trademark. Another special trait was that a confidant would know she was listening to their every word and would never pass on anything told in confidence. She made everyone welcome and comfortable in her presence.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband (Robert), her parents and her sisters, Doris Lucas and Alyce Lucas Liptock.
Surviving are her son, Scott (Lisa) Martin; daughter, Elisabeth “Lisa” (Glen) Martin Brozovich; granddaughters, Alyson (Kyle) Williams and Melinda (Michael) Scinto; grandson, Lucas Martin; great grandson, Hudson Williams; and great granddaughter, Mary Rose Scinto.
She is also survived by the three children of her sister, Alyce, and their respective families that are closely integrated into the extended family. She will also be dearly missed by her husband’s families as well as her many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Allnutt Funeral Service Drake Road Chapel in Fort Collins on Saturday October 12, 2024, at 11 AM with a reception to follow.
