Sarge was a loving husband and a wonderful uncle. He will be remembered as a great man of incredible integrity. He was the kind of man who could always be counted on and will be dearly missed by many.
Born in Freeport, Illinois on May 15, 1936, Sarge grew up with his fair share of hardships. His father, Robert Lincoln Sargent, died in 1944, when Sarge was just 7 years old. His mother, Lucille (Whitmer) Sargent had Parkinson’s disease so Sarge and his older brother Ransom, sister Virginia, and baby brother Wendell, went to live at Mooseheart, a home and school for children of widowed mothers. Virginia passed away in 1945 at the age of 12, having spent much of her short life in an iron lung, after contracting polio. Their mother passed in 1955, when Sarge was 19. In spite of these challenges, he graduated from Mooseheart, went on to study at North Central College in Naperville, IL, where he majored in history, and completed his bachelor's degree.
During his college years, Sarge took a job at Sears & Roebuck. While working there, he met his future wife and the love of his life. Patricia Flannigan was in the store to see a friend, to whom she owed a debt. They were introduced and Sarge was smitten. The feeling was mutual and so began their courtship. Sarge thought it important to be a bit more stable before marriage and wanted to save some money. After two years of dating, Pat said no, you are going to marry me and so they wed in 1962. When Sarge met Pat, he didn't just find a wife and a partner, he found a family. Pat’s family welcomed him into their loving arms and treated him as one of their own. Sarge went on to work as an Environmentalist Service Provider for Texaco and Chevron. His work took him to Illinois, Texas, and Oklahoma and Pat was there, at his side. In 1994, after 30 years with the company, Sarge retired. In 1999, Sarge and Pat moved out to Colorado to be closer to family. For 63 years they loved and cherished one another.
Though they had no children of their own, Sarge and Pat cherished each and every one of their many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews and close friends. He supported them in all they did; attending sporting events, school programs, orchestra and band events to name a few. Sarge was a central figure in their lives, as well as the lives of many others. Being with him was both comforting and inspiring.
Sarge loved to fish and was quite the fisherman. He was a remarkable woodworker and loved making wooden toys and furniture for relatives and friends. He liked all kinds of puzzles including jigsaw, sudoku, and crosswords. He enjoyed long walks, trips to the mountains, and meals with family and friends, whether at home or out on the town.
In all that he did, Sarge was a determined man with unwavering focus on what needed to be done. He never missed the chance to make every moment matter and truly lived his life to the fullest. The words "I give up" just weren't in his vocabulary. Whatever he did, he gave his all. Sarge was a source of strength and encouragement for others. He was truly one of a kind.
Sarge leaves behind the woman he cherished and loved, Pat Sargent; as well as too many beloved nieces & nephews and special friends to list. Along with his parents and his sister Virgina Sargent, Sarge is preceded in death by his brothers Ransom Sargent and Wendell Sargent; and by his beloved dachshunds, Shaner & Pebbles.
