Miriam was born in Pratt, Kansas July 19, 1930 to Alva N. Cain and Retta F. Griffeth. Miriam was a child of the depression whose family moved frequently, going to her father's latest job. Alva was a minister who was a missionary to the Kiowa Indians in Oklahoma and served churches in Kansas and Nebraska until World War II.
Miriam graduated from high school in Sedan, Kansas in 1948. She attended Ottawa University graduating with a bachelor's degree in education in 1951.
On July 1, 1953, Miriam married the love of her life, Joe G. Mears. Two daughters came from this union - Angela in 1954 and Laura in 1957. Angela blessed her with two granddaughters - Amanda in 1984 and Ariana in 1986. Amanda gave her three great grandchildren - James in 2012, Jackson in 2014 and Sienna in 2019. Miriam lived for her family, each generation holding a special place in her heart. The love and pride she felt for each one was always present in her smile and the loving looks she gave them.
Miriam was a fourth grade school teacher until Angela arrived. She was a stay at home mom for ten years and then began substitute teaching to help occupy her time while Joe was in Vietnam. When Joe retired from the military and opened his law office, Miriam was his secretary and executive assistant. After Joe closed his practice, Miriam worked at her daughter Laura’s store, The Fig Leaf, for over thirty years, cutting fabric, chatting with customers and helping wherever she was needed. She was at The Fig Leaf three days a week until the month before she passed, still greeting all who came through the door and visiting with customers and friends she had known for years.
She was a remarkable woman.
Miriam is survived by her daughter, Laura and her husband Rob Shotwell; granddaughters, Amanda Clark, and Ariana Clark, and their spouses Joshua Willis and Dustin Gardner; and great grandchildren, James, Jackson and Sienna Willis. She was preceded in death by her daughter Angela, and by her husband Joe.
A Celebration of Miriam's Life will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025 at 10:00am at Resthaven Funeral Home in Fort Collins.
