Julian was my childhood friend. His parents were good friends of my parents and his dad was my pitching instructor. My Dad helped Julian with his hitting in little league. After all these years I thought I might look up Julian and, instead, found this sad news - I know Julian must have been a wonderful coach and man...

Great man. Forged alot of young minds. Quick antidote on who couch was. Coach was spotting a player during the squat cage exercise and the bar bell came down on his thumb and literally severed it off. He didn't have a reaction and simply proceeded to pick up his thumb and ask an assistant coach to drive him to the hospital. NOT A SOUND out of him. Not built like that anymore. BYU GO!!!!

I met Julian the very first day of fall football practice at BYU in 1971. We were both offensive linemen and lived next to each other in Helaman Halls. He was  one of the few non-members on the team. We had many discussions about religion.  He was smitten by his beautiful family home evening "mother", Diane and tried to ask her on a date. He ended up taking the formal missionary discussions and by the end of the year, he asked me to baptize him.  This opened the door so he could finally fall in love with Diane.  I left on a mission, he married Diane. When I came home, he was a star lineman on the team. We reconnected 30 years later. I am still so thankful he remained a true believer with a strong family and still in LOVE with his eternal sweetheart. Prayers for loving angels to put their loving arms around all of you.

He was one of those memorable teachers who truly cared about individual students.  He made our lives better in so many ways.  45 years later, I can still hear his words.    What a great loss

Rest easy Coach Smilowitz. Thank you for all the energy you poured into us. The hard work you instilled in me has helped me to this day. I’m a better man and leader thanks to the fundamentals of football you taught us. You coached my older brother Mykeal and I and I’m so thankful for it. Once an Indian always an Indian. Rest in heaven Coach!

My heart is broken!!!! Coach was my dearest of friends. Over the last 25 yrs + of friendship, he made me a better person. He was always there for me. He listened, gave guidance and always had my back. He was the smartest and most loving souls.  His beautiful family welcomed me with open arms. Thank you for sharing him with me.

 I was so proud to be HIS bus driver,  for HIS teams. We all made game day, respectful, professional and exciting. So, blessed to all have one another. His yrs of coaching Fullerton compares to NO other…You had to be a part. To really understand his love and compassion, for his position and love of the game. Glad we spoke often and recently. I can still hear his voice. My deepest condolences to the Smilowitz Family.  Be at peace my friend. I will miss you so very much!!!!!!!

We are heartbroken to hear of the loss of our coach, mentor and friend. Coach Smiley has influenced the lives of many young people and had the ability to motivate and get the best out of each life he touched. He will always be remembered and honored as one of the best men this world has to offer. Peace and comfort to the family and all that were influenced by this good man.

We were neighbors for many years in La Mirada when Warren, Darcy and Shelly and myself Evelyn moved across the street in 1965. Watched Julian and Cleo and Scott grow up. Rest in peace Julian and prayers to your family.

Coach I cant thank you enough for being such a great coach to me, You always had my best interest at hand, You believed in  me when i didnt believe in myself, you  helped me overcome many obstacles.  I will always be fond of the converstations you needed to have with me even when I didnt think I needed, I later realized  I needed.  Thanks for being good to me and part of you will always be with me. thanks for being so good to the Mooshagian Family, you were a special man.

Julian was a great man and coach, I remember him well during his coaching days at Neff and La Mirada when my Father was the Head Coach! 
One thing is for sure he changed the lives of many and will be sadly missed!
