Biography of Man Yin Woo
Man Yin Wong was born August 22, 1930 in Tak Sing Lee, Toisan, Kwangtung, China. As a young girl, she attended a Baptist elementary school in Hong Kong and so was exposed to the gospel and the Bible from an early age (later on, she found a way to send her own children to a Baptist elementary school in Texas, despite limited resources, because she wanted them to have the same spiritual foundation). She lived through the turmoil of World War II, including attacks by the Japanese and the loss of her own father due to illness and scarce medical care.
At 17 years of age, her marriage to Foon Woo was arranged and they married on July 18, 1947. Once married, she moved to the U.S. and together with Foon had three sons: Walter, Winston, and Warren. In addition to raising her own family, she also helped care for Foon’s six younger siblings. After the boys completed their own education, Man Yin was finally able to achieve her dream of going to college, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in August 1980.
She filled many of her days in San Antonio with driving older Chinese ladies to various medical, administrative, and legal appointments, helping those who could not write or speak in English and making use of her ability to speak English, Toisan, Cantonese, and Mandarin. After many decades in Texas, and due to Foon’s declining health, she and Foon moved to Southern California in 2005. Living in Orange County allowed Winston and Warren to take care of their Pop’s dialysis treatments and to make sure their mom was well cared for in her retirement years and following Foon’s passing. She enjoyed eating dim sum, going to the hairdresser, and attending a nearby Cantonese church until the COVID-19 pandemic made it increasingly difficult to move around.
In 2018, Man Yin was diagnosed with breast cancer but maintained relative independence even as she underwent hormone treatments, which kept her tumor at bay for another seven years. In the last years of her life, she enjoyed looking back on old photographs and reminiscing about when her boys were little. She passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025, in the company of her three sons. Man Yin is survived by her sons—Walter (wife Margaret), Winston, and Warren (wife Lisa)—as well as six grandchildren (Ryan and his wife Geraldine, Ellery and her husband Walter, Everett, Ashley, Lynnette, and Garrett and his wife Jennifer) and five great-grandchildren (Celine and Grant, Elleryrose, Elijah and Jordan).
