

Born on June 25, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from College of Saint Mary of the Springs (Ohio Dominican University) in Columbus. She married Thomas Gray in December of 1951 and was blessed with seven children. They relocated from Columbus to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and eventually settled in Fullerton, California in 1966.
In 1969 Mary began her twenty-five year career as a laboratory technologist at Anaheim General Hospital. In 1975 she married her second husband, Dr. Leon Schmittou, to whom she remained married until his death in 2002. Together they were active with the Outboard Boat Club of Long Beach and the Motor Coach Association. She later enjoyed activities at the Fullerton Senior Center, and spending quality time with her extended family. Mary was a devout Catholic who regularly attended Mass services and sang in the choir at St Juliana Falconieri Church in Fullerton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy Nolan; her brother, Capt. James Nolan (USAF); her sister, Rita Connair; and her second husband, Dr. Leon Schmittou.
As a lovingly supportive and dedicated mother, Mary is survived by her seven children Dan, Tim, Chris, Ellen, Bonnie, Carol, and Peter, as well as by her thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be held on June 28th at 7 PM and her funeral on June 29th at 10 AM, both at St Julianna’s Falconieri Church, Fullerton.
