Tom was born in Sacramento, CA, on January 31, 1953, to Fred and Dorothy Oliveri. He moved to Yorba Linda during high school where he played baseball for Valencia High School. While in high school and college, Tom was an inspector in the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Standardization Program. He received an agricultural biology degree from Cal Poly Pomona in 1977 and joined Western Growers, a leading produce industry trade association, in 1978.
Throughout his career, which spanned over four decades, Tom demonstrated uncommon dedication to the Western Growers membership and established himself as a foremost authority in the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA), earning the affectionate moniker, “Tommy O.” Even though he retired from Western Growers in January 2018, Tom couldn’t stay away from the fresh produce industry for long, and joined the law firm of Rynn & Janowsky as a PACA consultant, where he remained engaged up to his passing.
Tom was devoted to his children, and is survived by his son, Matthew, and his daughter, Marci. His daily text messages and phone calls are already missed. Tom was known for his great sense of humor, quick wit and generous spirit. He always put others before himself, had a heart of gold and was admired by many, both personally and professionally. When he was not working, Tom enjoyed spending time with his family, boating, fishing, going to the gun range and watching Angels baseball.
The passing of Tom will leave a hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him, admired him and considered him a friend.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
