Alice Elaine Tooke was born on October 30, 1929 in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada. The third of four children, Alice grew up without substantial means in a family with a strong belief in education. After graduating secondary school, Alice and her sister Rose took nurses training together at Saskatoon Hospital. With their new RN degrees, they traveled with a classmate to the US to work in hospitals starting in Washington State, then to California where Alice met her husband David Clifford Carter (“Cliff”). Alice and Cliff married in September 1954. They had daughter Kathleen (Blazek) in 1957 and Alice became a US citizen shortly thereafter. Daughter Jennifer came along in 1959. Alice worked as an Operating Room Nurse at San Jose (California) Hospital until the family moved to Maryland in 1969 where Alice supported Cliff’s work as a lobbyist for the US Beet Sugar Industry until his death in 1990. She later moved to Florida for a time to be closer to her daughter Kathleen and her grandchildren Kevin Gorman (Kim) and Michael Gorman (Amy). Alice returned to Maryland in 2014 to reside at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg near her daughter Jennifer.
Alice was a staunch cheerleader for her family, always seeing the best in them. She formed loyal friendships everywhere she lived. Never a gossip, always a great listener. She had a very sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor. Until just a short time before her death, she remained a crossword and jigsaw puzzle whiz, played to win at cribbage, and enjoyed other games with her Asbury neighbors. So many neighbors would tell her daughters, “I just love your mother.” So do we. And we will miss her greatly.
Services will be private to the family.
